The Executive Pathways Program is a paid summer internship (June – August) for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service.

The Population Health Equity Intern will serve in the Office the Office of the Medicaid Medical Director (OMMD). The Population Health Equity Intern will support the design, evaluation, reporting, and community engagement efforts related to health equity within Minnesota’s Medicaid program. This internship provides an opportunity to engage directly with policy development and community-informed, equity-centered processes that aim to improve population health outcomes for Minnesotans. This internship role provides a unique experience to receive mentorship and interactive learning opportunities, including one-on-one lectures with Dr. Nathan Chomilo on health equity, policy, and Medicaid, allowing you to deepen your understanding of these critical areas. The internship also exposes you to a broad range of projects within OMMD, where you will work alongside a diverse team of professionals dedicated to improving health outcomes.

Some responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Team Support: Attend OMMD team meetings, contribute to projects, and assist with community engagement events to support the department's initiatives.
  • Policy Evaluation: Evaluate policies for their impact on public health and health equity, providing insights and recommendations.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze population-level data on Medicaid enrollment and health outcomes, identifying trends and disparities.
  • Data-to-Action: Learn and demonstrate how to turn data into actionable insights to inform Medicaid population health policies and programs.
  • Public Outreach Campaigns: Assist in the creation of public outreach campaigns focused on health equity, helping to raise awareness and educate the public.
  • External Communications: Contribute to the creation of newsletters and other external communications that reflect OMMD’s work and impact.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:

You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; or recently graduated December 2024 or May 2025

AND

  • Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred majors include: Public Health, Public Policy, Pre-Medicine, Nursing, Psychology, or related fields
  • Writing/oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in diverse group

Additional Requirements

  • Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)
  • Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment
  • Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship
  • Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
