The DNR is currently seeking to fill a permanent full-time Laborer, Trades & Equipment position located in Grand Rapids, MN. Days of work vary based on season and are typically Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the winter months (typically December through March), the schedule will include expanded hours during grooming season.
This position exists to perform and, at times act as lead worker to seasonal staff, in carrying out maintenance, rehabilitation and development projects at public water accesses, water campsites, campgrounds and over 200 miles of trails so that the natural resources are preserved and the facilities are adequately developed and maintained for the enjoyment and safety of visitors.

This position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.

Responsibilities include:
- Operate equipment to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement to maintain, construct and service Parks and Trails recreation facilities, so that safe and high-quality facilities are provided for public use. Use and maintain a variety of power equipment, power tools and hand tools. Perform necessary inspections and most maintenance on all pieces of equipment. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.
- Provide labor service and occasionally act as lead to maintain, develop, construct and service Parks and Trails administered public water accesses, water campsites, trails and campgrounds so that the facilities are safe and sustainable. Provide direction and feedback to other staff as necessary to accomplish area goals., so that safe and high-quality facilities are provided for public use.
- Apply technical knowledge of equipment capabilities, construction and landscape development. Utilize maps, designs, management plans and other resources in order to evaluate and improve existing facilities, prepare for upcoming projects, and ensure maintenance and development ideas are well developed and carried out appropriately.
- Maintain accurate operational records, provide professional customer service, and complete other duties as assigned by the lead worker or supervisor.
- Position requires a Class A Driver's License (CDL), passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to six (6) months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in trades work and construction.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain medium & heavy motorized equipment, e.g. dump trucks, snow plows, snow groomers, tractors with trailers, watercraft, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, auger, plus power and hand tools, including chain saws, air compressors, carpentry tools, and other equipment/tools as assigned.
- Ability to service, perform minor repairs and make adjustments to machinery and equipment, including general maintenance and repair of buildings.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to assist or perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical assignments, including installation and maintenance of equipment, plumbing, heating and electrical systems.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal directions sufficient to interpret, communicate and carry out verbal assignments, safely and efficiently.
- Strength and agility sufficient to load, operate and repair equipment and materials.
- Endurance sufficient to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, sun and wind.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Ability to communicate to staff/visitors, etc.
- Ability to solve problems, make decisions, work safely and effectively with others.
- Current possession of Class A license.
- Two years of experience in equipment operation and maintenance of equipment such as trucks, trailers, mowers, chainsaws, boats, ATV's, snowmobiles, and other related equipment.
- Working knowledge of civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning process, as applicable to recreation facility design and construction.
- Knowledge and/or experience in natural resource management fields such as forestry, wildlife management, hydrology.
- Knowledge of organizations, groups and interests in outdoor activities.
- Technical school certificates, licensure or degrees in one or more of the following: carpentry, construction, electrical repair, plumbing, masonry, small engine repair/automotive, or HVAC.
- Experience providing lead work direction/assigning tasks/ensuring completion.
