Job Summary
The IT Secure Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing secure IT systems and infrastructure for the Paid Leave program at the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). This role involves ensuring the robustness and resilience of IT systems against cyber threats, aligning with NICE framework categories such as Protect and Defend (PR) and Securely Provision (SP).
Responsibilities include:
- Design and develop secure architecture for IT systems, ensuring that all new systems, network configurations, and software deployments adhere to best practices in cybersecurity.
- Implement and configure secure systems and applications, ensuring they are set up and maintained according to established security guidelines.
- Oversee the development of new hardware and software, ensuring that configurations are optimized for security.
- Analyze and respond to security events and incidents.
- Monitor security alerts, investigating potential breaches, and taking immediate action to mitigate risks.
- Manage and support security infrastructure components like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption technologies.
- Configure and maintain secure network systems, working closely with MNIT enterprise network and cloud services.
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments to identify weaknesses in system and applications.
This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:
- Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in St. Paul, Minnesota.
- Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.
Qualifications
Position requires a minimum of four (4) years of IT related experience in Information Security.
Experience must include:
- Experience and a deep understanding of various cybersecurity principles such as confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA triad).
- Experience and skills designing secure system architectures, including the ability to identify and mitigate potential security flaws in system design.
- Experience implementing network security measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and network segmentation strategies.
- Experience and expertise in data protection techniques including encryption, tokenization, and secure data storage practices.
- Experience and skills conducting incident response activities, including investigation, containment, eradication, and recovery from security incidents.
- Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
- Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Salary : $76,253 - $125,781
