Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor at SCC serves as a member of a professional team providing comprehensive advising services for our students, parents, high school counselors and other stakeholders regarding multiple areas including program choices, curriculum, course placement, enrollment procedures, business office policies, transfer policies, and financial aid. The position works effectively with Student Affairs offices, faculty, and academic departments to meet the goals and objectives of the department / division and the college.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
Provide comprehensive academic advising and coaching to new, current and returning students.
- Advise students on appropriate course selection, troubleshoot issues, and overcome achievement barriers.
- Identify at-risk students and develop academic recovery plans for improved retention and program completion.
- Support students with academic progress concerns, warning, probation, and suspensions.
- Guide students to college-wide services and community resources for career exploration and personal support.
- Provide coaching and support to help students develop effective learning strategies, time management skills, and goal-setting techniques.
- Interpret and translate SCC, Minnesota State, and Federal policies and guidelines into advising procedures and services.
- Serve as an organizational liaison for assigned academic programs and student populations.
- Assist with long-term academic and program planning through collaboration with division chairs and faculty.
- Track and adjust academic plans, evaluate program requirements, and register students for courses.
Plan and implement activities and events related to course placement, academic / career advising, financial aid, and transfer.
Maintain a thorough understanding of college policies, procedures, programs, and services.
Perform Other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.
