What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Operations position at MLS League Office?
Overview
The Director of Operations leads the day-to-day planning, coordination and logistics for MLS/SUM events. These events include, but not limited to, the Mexico National Team Tour, Leagues Cup, Campeones Cup, as well as other matches promoted or operated by MLS/SUM.
Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, and execute logistical and functional needs for all MLS/SUM events and MLS-run matches.
- Serve as the primary liaison with MLS Operations and club / stadium operations on all key policies (matchday ops, venue design standards)
- Liaise with selected host venues, governing bodies and external stakeholders to ensure all stadium and match operations requirements are met.
- Support matchday operations staff secure training facilities, coordinating team and leagues requirement and requests at each location site
- Be responsible for Event Guide preparation and communication with a host of key internal and external stakeholders.
- Plan and deliver All-Agency and Match Coordination meetings with selected host venues and match stakeholders
- Prepare and manage department and operational budget forecasts and expenses for all assigned matches.
- Handle SUM assignments and travel schedule for department employees and independent contractors.
- Accomplish team results by communicating job expectations and managing the Performance Management process:
- Plan, monitor, and review performance.
- Coach and counsel employees;
- Develop and implement department procedures and productivity standards and reinforce Company policies
- Develop personal growth opportunities and continued professional development for employees.
- Provide operations support at assigned MLS events (e.g. MLS All-Star, MLS Playoffs, and MLS Cup).
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President, Matchday Operations & Administration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management or a related field
- 8 years of experience in both professional soccer and operations / event management
Required Skills
- Effective leadership in managing staff and future development of staff
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience in managing sophisticated budget structure
- Proficiency in written materials including memos and policy documentation
- Advances communication skills to present verbal and written presentations and briefings to both internal and external key stakeholders.
- Strong presentation skills will the ability to effectively deliver important topics to internal and external
- High level of commitment to quality of work and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and AutoCAD
- Demonstrate decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal direction.
- Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work remotely while on business travel
Desired Skills
- Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency)
- Knowledge of the sport of soccer
- Master’s degree in business or Sports & Entertainment Administration
