Job Title: Natural Resources Forestry Specialist Senior
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a highly qualified professional to serve as a Natural Resources Forestry Specialist Senior in the Backus, MN area. As a key member of the State Land Management – Timber Program team, this position will be responsible for leading the management, planning, and implementation of forest programs within the assigned area.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and administer the State Land Management – Timber Program at the Area level to ensure effective implementation, compliance with laws and policies, and achievement of targets and goals.
- Develop and manage budgets for assigned programs to ensure cost-effectiveness, stay within allotments, and meet priorities.
- Develop and coordinate management of policies and plans related to timber sales programs to achieve annual and long-term goals.
- Coordinate information and education efforts to inform the public about the Division's programs and keep colleagues updated on new developments in methods and procedures.
- Implement field assignments under the guidance of area program foresters.
- Participate in special assignments on committees, boards, fire teams, task forces, and training teams to provide input for policy development and expand programs.
- Enforce forest rules and statutes within the Area, including fire suppression and management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Science or Management from a Society of American Foresters-accredited university or comparable accrediting institution.
- Two years of intermediate professional forestry experience or three years of entry-level professional forestry experience.
- Knowledge of forest management theory and techniques sufficient to plan and organize management activities, oversee program management practices, and lead professional employees and contractors.
- Familiarity with division policies and procedures governing program activities, including contract administration.
- Leadership and human relations skills to motivate people, obtain program commitment, and resolve conflicts.
- Ability to communicate complex concepts and principles effectively in verbal and written formats.
- Wildland firefighter qualification and ability to work in variable weather conditions, including weekends, evenings, and extended periods away from home during elevated fire danger.
