What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Highway Maintenance Worker position at MnDOT?
One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience). Must have written and oral communication skills sufficient to keep records and read and interpret directions.
Below are some examples of typical work for both the Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist roles. The actual day to day work will be assigned based on the project or immediate need in support of keeping our families, friends and communities traveling safely through all weather and seasonal conditions. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.
These positions are valued members of District 1's maintenance teams and to MnDOT's summer operations. Day to day work isn't limited to but may include:
- Assisting in maintaining the roadway surfaces and shoulders
- Debris removal from roadways, right-of-ways and roadsides
- Transferring and operating heavy equipment
- Assist with traffic control in high volume traffic settings
- Roadside mowing, trimming, and landscape maintenance
- Assist with installation and repair of signs and guardrails
- Perform operational needs in the soils unit
- This position performs work under close supervision
Positions in bridge maintenance will assist with performing daily routine work assignments following established procedures for bridge maintenance and other related structures. Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Performing bridge maintenance and such as bridge flushing, concrete repair, deck crack sealing, pouring joint replacement/repair, spot painting
- Transferring and operating heavy equipment
- Traffic control, flagging & standing for extended periods
- Position requires horizontal, vertical and over headwork of the following: jackhammer work (35-85 pound hammers), mixing and placing concrete, and concrete removal
- Work is done in high traffic areas.
Locations may include the following work areas in District 1 (Northeastern MN):
Truck Stations: McGregor, Floodwood, Grand Rapids, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Grand Marais, International Falls, Cook, Pine City, Carlton, Moose Lake, & Sandstone
Traffic Services: Duluth (Pike Lake) & Virginia
Bridge Maintenance: Virginia
These positions are anticipated to run from approximately April 23, 2025 - October 07, 2025. Regular summer hours for these positions are 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday.
Please note: Incumbents are required to be immediately accessible to a phone and MUST be able to report to work within ONE (1) HOUR of being called.
This is a multi-level posting - If these positions are not filled at the Transportation Generalist level (see qualifications below), they may be filled at the Transportation Associate level (see qualifications below).
Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction at the time of application. Driver's license history will be reviewed. Tanker endorsement must be achieved within 2 weeks of hire date. (*_Resume must clearly state how you meet this requirement in order to be considered.)*_
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Transportation Associate Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction at the time of application. Driver's license history will be reviewed. Tanker endorsement must be achieved within 2 weeks of hire date. Applicant resume must clearly state how you meet this requirement in order to be considered.
- Must have written and oral communication skills sufficient to keep records and read and interpret directions.
- Must have the ability to learn the knowledge of heavy equipment, capabilities, and uses.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
