Essential Functions
Responsibility Statement: Prepares environment for the surgical case.
- Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative areas according to need.
- Select and prepare supplies and instruments for the sterile field.
- Coordinate room preparation with the circulator.
- Assures all equipment is present and functioning before use.
- Demonstrates competence in cleaning and preparing rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning.
- Restock rooms, storerooms, specialty carts, and other areas as needed.
- Passes correct instrumentation, supplies, and sutures as needed by the physician.
- Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic techniques and procedures.
- Observe and report contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique. Initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
- Counts all sharps, sponges, instruments, and other items as dictated by hospital policy.
- Accurately records, handles, and labels specimens and cultures.
- Sterilizes instruments, equipment, surgical linens, and supplies such as surgical packs, treatment trays, etc., according to established procedures.
- Assemble packs of supplies, instruments, dressing, treatment trays, etc., according to established procedures.
- Labels, seals, and maintains control records of items possessed.
- Disassembles inspects, performs minor maintenance or reconditioning, recommends repair, cleans, and reassembles surgical instruments, needles, linen, and electrical or mechanical equipment.
- Performs work-related duties such as general housekeeping, minor maintenance of area equipment, and surveillance of area supply stock levels.
- Assists in updating preference cards and communicates channels to appropriate personnel.
- Demonstrates knowledge of specialty area assignment. Maintains adequate inventory levels.
- Maintains and modifies tray instrument lists and logs as needed.
- Maintains records of instruments or supplies sent for repair or loaned to other institutions or physicians.
- Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment, and instruments.
- Provides accurate documentation on charges and inventory items in an electronic documentation system.
- Demonstrates infection control measures and universal precautions.
- Demonstrates an awareness of safety principles and utilizes proper body mechanics.
- Participates in unit meetings and attends required hospital and departmental in-services.
- Demonstrates professionalism and interest in work by maintaining acceptable work habits.
- Assumes responsibility for personal and job-related growth.
- Pursuit of quality and effective communication.
- Must complete all ongoing house-wide and/or departmental communication training.
- Must practice and develop caring communication as presented in training.
- Must utilize these skills consistently with all internal and external customers (i.e. patients, medical staff, visitors, and staff).
Experience:
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of Surgical Tech experience
- Two years of experience in surgical scrub experience required.
- Must be able to scrub for a multitude of specialties including: general; ortho; ophthalmology; urology; ENT; endoscopy, and C-section.
- 2 years of ORTHO experience is required.
- High school graduate or equivalent with courses in physical and natural sciences and mathematics preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program or previous surgical scrub experience preferred.
- Surgical Technologist Certification preferred
- BLS/BCLS is required
