Position Summary
The Senior Environmental Manager is responsible for the oversight of compliance, regulations, and environmental policies at Modern’s solid waste facilities (landfills, materials recovery facilities, collection operation, and transfer stations). Candidate must be able to perform in various roles of staff management, project oversight, and company’s environmental, compliance and regulatory requirements of solid waste facilities.
Essential Responsibilities
- Manages all permits governing the compliance and regulatory requirements of solid waste sites and other operations (landfill, transfer stations, collection operations and material recovery facilities).
- Lead professional engineering firms in preparing regulatory documents permitting applications, permit renewals, regulatory compliance, all other necessary requirements for solid waste facilities.
- Work with operation teams to ensure compliance with permits and to prevent or resolve compliance issues.
- Develop and manage environmental programs and management systems, guidance, and procedures necessary to assure compliance with company policies, environmental regulations, and other legal conditions.
- Provides guidance and oversight to environmental staff on company environmental, compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the preparation and review of engineering, monitoring and environmental reports and audits.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental policies; ensure all solid waste sites are operated in a manner that is consistent with conditions stipulated in their applicable permits.
- Manages 3rd party consultants, contractors and other professionals needed to design and construct required projects, ensuring projects are being constructed per design and are on time and within budget.
- Lead the development and execution of regulatory tracking processes and procedures to ensure positive and proactive relationships with all required governing bodies (Federal, State, and Municipalities).
- Works with landfill operations and construction manager, and gas/leachate manager to formulate short-term and long-term goals and action plans in alignment with regulatory guidelines.
- Administers and coordinates the customer waste and special waste review and approval program that documents compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
- Assists in estimating the cost of identified site capital needs and follow-through with inclusion in annual budget exercises.
- Build and develop talent on the team, understand employees’ career goals and provide coaching to get employees ready for advancement with the Company.
- Supervise and manage performance; ensure tasks are appropriately delegated and completed by monitoring performance and holding employees accountable for meeting expectations.
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to staff, deliver corrective action and discipline when necessary, and document all performance issues.
- Ensure employees adhere to company policies and legal regulations, engage HR when appropriate.
- Manage conflict and crisis; proactively anticipate, manage and constructively resolve conflicts and disagreements.
- Hold regular team meetings to communicate priorities, safety, policies, company events, etc.
- Monitor employee time and attendance, minimizing overtime and ensuring that employees do not exceed limits established by regulatory agencies.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil, or Mechanical
- Five to seven years of environmental related work experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CAD, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with a variety of audiences.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- In depth knowledge of environmental regulations, including solid waste, air, storm water and wastewater.
- In depth knowledge of solid waste facilities and permitting.
- Strong project management skills with ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
- Experience leading environmental, engineering, and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations.
- Working knowledge of safety regulations

Salary : $120,000 - $130,000
