Senior Director of Engineering – EdTech
Location: Remote or Hybrid (Tempe, AZ preferred)
Travel: Minimal (Up to 5%) | Full-Time
Are you a senior engineering leader with a passion for scaling impactful technology? An industry-leading EdTech organization is looking for a Senior Director of Engineering to lead enterprise-level development initiatives, build best-in-class digital learning platforms, and mentor high-performing technical teams.
This executive-level role plays a vital part in shaping the company’s technology roadmap and product delivery strategy, helping millions of students and educators access engaging and effective learning experiences.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead, mentor, and scale engineering teams (30 people) focused on enterprise-grade software development
- Oversee architectural decisions, engineering delivery, and technical operations at scale
- Collaborate with product, design, and leadership teams to align engineering outcomes with business goals
- Drive innovation in platform architecture, API development, cloud infrastructure, and integrations
- Guide solution design and participate in technical reviews, delivery planning, and incident response
- Manage a $4M budget for FTE and contractor resourcing
- Establish performance benchmarks and ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and security
- Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies that solve business problems
- Support a DevOps culture through automation, containerization, and CI/CD practices
- Represent Engineering in cross-functional and executive-level conversations
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and technical excellence
- Other leadership responsibilities as required
What You Bring:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred
- 20 years in software engineering, with at least 10 years in leadership roles
- Experience leading large-scale development teams and delivering complex systems
- Deep technical expertise in Java, object-oriented programming, API development, and databases
- Strong architectural experience across cloud-native platforms (AWS preferred), containers, and scalable services
- Track record of building secure, high-performing enterprise solutions
- Proficiency in Agile methodologies and modern development practices
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Passion for building and mentoring world-class technical talent
- Knowledge of LMS or content management platforms is a plus
- Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on execution and problem solving
- A self-starter mindset with exceptional time and team management abilities
