Director of Software Engineering – EdTech Product & Platform
Location: Remote or Hybrid (Tempe, AZ preferred)
Travel: Minimal (Up to 5%) | Full-Time
A mission-driven EdTech company is seeking a visionary and experienced Director of Software Engineering to lead the development and delivery of enterprise-level applications that support millions of learners and educators. In this high-impact role, you’ll oversee multiple engineering teams, guide strategic technology initiatives, and drive operational excellence across systems, services, and software platforms.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead multiple engineering teams (15–50 people) focused on full-stack development, architecture, and platform performance
- Collaborate with executive leadership to define and execute long-term technology roadmaps and investment strategies
- Manage software development lifecycle (SDLC) standards, processes, and tools
- Align product development with business goals by defining KPIs, SLAs, and security compliance measures
- Drive vendor management, contract negotiations, and service agreements
- Partner cross-functionally with product, design, customer success, and infrastructure teams
- Oversee systems implementation, technology forecasting, and resource planning
- Monitor system performance and implement strategies to improve reliability and cost efficiency
- Establish and manage departmental and project budgets
- Maintain on-call availability and lead incident response when necessary
- Guide technology vision, architecture strategy, and continuous improvement efforts
- Participate in leadership hiring, mentorship, and performance development
- Other duties as required
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of relevant experience; Master’s with 8 years; or PhD with 7 years
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams at scale (15 engineers across multiple teams)
- Strong technical expertise in modern web technologies: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, REST APIs, microservices, React, Java, C#, Node.js
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and SaaS/PaaS development environments
- Demonstrated success executing both short- and long-term technology strategies
- Skilled in technology evaluation, cost/benefit analysis, and driving ROI
- Experience managing vendors, contracts, and budgets
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a collaborative mindset
- Strong analytical skills and a track record of process optimization and innovation
- Experience managing incident response and service delivery KPIs
- Strategic thinker with the ability to inspire high-performance cultures
