Job Summary
The Nurse Manager oversees the nursing unit / department's operations, ensuring the delivery of exceptional patient care through effective utilization of nursing processes and standards. This role fosters an environment that supports the growth and development of staff while managing human, fiscal, and other nursing resources efficiently. The Nurse Manager supports the goals and values of the nursing department and hospital, operating under the guidance of a Director or Senior Manager.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate optimal patient care delivery across the unit.
- Accountable for the efficient operation of the unit and staff, ensuring that all care plans, treatments, and orders are executed effectively.
- Ensure compliance with clinical care standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development and evaluation of policies aimed at enhancing operational efficiency within the department.
- Implement strategic and operational plans for the clinical area.
- Manage staffing and scheduling to facilitate high-quality, efficient patient care.
- Foster a collaborative practice environment that encourages staff participation in establishing clinical standards.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary care efforts with other departments.
- Conduct regular patient rounds with staff, prioritizing staff nurse patient interactions alongside attending physicians.
- Participate in change of shift and discharge planning meetings.
- Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, and role model for staff while promoting effective communication and customer service.
- Work with leadership and Human Resources on performance management, including hiring, transfers, and conflict resolution.
- Ensure that patient care documentation is accurate and complete.
- Lead safety and performance improvement initiatives.
- Address and resolve customer complaints promptly and positively.
- Assess clinical competencies of staff and develop programs to enhance their skills and job satisfaction.
- Monitor and modify budgetary needs and expenses as required.
- Ensure the availability and functionality of necessary supplies and equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
