**This is on call as needed position. Candidate is with at least 2 years’ experience working in a daycare, preschool, and/or childcare setting with infants and young children, working towards Certificate of Achievement in Early Childhood Development with at least 6 units of Early Childhood Education preferred**
Pay rates for Union positions are set in the Collective Bargaining Agreement with SEIU Local 521. Each position has a total of six steps, Step 1 (entry level) through Step 6 (15 years of employment with the organization). Union staff are promoted from Step 1 to Step 2 upon their one-year anniversary. The current Step 1 rate for this position is $28.09/hr, and the current Step 6 rate for this position is $31.01/hr.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create a safe, healthy environment to nurture children to grow physically and emotionally.*
- Identify children’s cues and be able to respond quickly to their needs with proper skills.*
- Provide children with positive and nurturing play experience.
- Ensure children’s basic needs are being met (feedings, changing diapers, etc.).*
- Take an active role and making sure children are getting the attention they need.*
- Provide childcare during off site aftercare group meetings.*
- Assist mothers in being attentive to their child’s physical, mental, emotional and developmental needs.*
- Help mothers and children build healthy attachments.
- Assist mothers to appropriately discipline children with tone, body language and respect.
- Assist mothers in proper hygiene for child when needed (bathing, nails, etc.).
- Acknowledge mothers’ concerns and assist with helpful answers to their questions regarding children.*
- Help mothers identify children’s cues and be able to respond appropriately to children’s needs with proper skills.
- Build mother’s parenting skills through hands on experience.*
- Conduct and ensure that all children in case load receive assessments within 10 working days.*
- Perform ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE assessments throughout treatment.*
- Advocate on behalf of the child by making recommendations to mother to meet child’s needs.*
- Make appropriate referrals and work closely with other resource agencies to ensure quality care for child.
- Conduct weekly 1x1 sessions with mothers to monitor child’s progress.
- Maintain child files and enter progress notes into the Electronic Health Record of each child.*
- Assist with or facilitate groups (e.g., Celebrating Families! 0-3, Intersessions Parenting 0-3, Mommy and Me, and Exercise Group).
- Be in regular communication with Counselors and House Managers.
- Attend mandatory and other training to enhance work experience.*
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: (E = Essential; D = Desired)
- At least 6 units of Early Childhood Education. (E)
- Working towards Certificate of Achievement in Early Childhood Development. Early Childhood Mental Health units. (D)
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a daycare, preschool, and/or childcare setting with infants and young children. (E)
- Experience working with infants and young children with Neonatal Drug Withdrawal, FAS/FAE, other disabilities. (D)
- Ability to make quick decisions to keep the children and facility safe. (E)
- Ability to handle the emotional, physical, and practical demands of working in a residential facility. (E)
- Good verbal and written English language skills. (E)
- Proven ability to remain calm when clients are in emotional crisis. (E)
- Adequate cultural awareness to effectively serve a diverse population. (E)
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other professionals in an intensive, fast-paced, hands-on environment. (D)
- Knowledge and understanding of the disease concept of alcohol and other drug addiction effect on children. (E)
- Experience using common computer software programs including MS Office; (E) experience with Welligent. (D)
- Knowledge of 12-step recovery program. (D)
- Bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Vietnamese, English/Mandarin, English/Tagalog). (D)
- Must pass and maintain necessary clearances and drug screening. (E)
- A valid California Driver License, with access to a reliable vehicle/for driving a company vehicle, current proof of auto liability insurance, and a clean DMV record. (E)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires walking short distances, sitting, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds (clients’ children), pushing and pulling (strollers, cribs, toys).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office environment and residential setting.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENT:
Local travel to training, meetings and other cooperative programs may be required.
