The Director of Payroll will support the full cycle of payroll. In this role, she/he/they will oversee all things payroll including, but not limited to, payroll processing, payroll taxes, deductions related to benefits, 401(k) plan, and ACA. This role will lead company-wide Payroll training with the support from the senior payroll manager. This position will lead payroll-related communication with restaurant management/corporate operations, and will ensure weekly payroll is processed correctly and in a timely manner. The Director will also administer any changes and/or implementations related to payroll processes, and will be a subject matter expert on all legal updates and regulations applicable in the jurisdictions we operate in.
Compensation Band: $110,000 - $125,000 annually

Responsibilities
- Oversees all payroll processes and procedures.
- Ensures consistent and timely weekly disbursement of payroll, including garnishments, tips, benefits, and taxes to employees consistent with federal and state wage and hour laws
- Continuously evaluate current payroll processes; design short-term and long-term strategies for improvement in payroll operations leading to best practices in all aspects of the payroll process
- Approve all manual out-of-cycle cycle payroll checks
- Analyze employee time clock data, identify inconsistencies, and problem solve through follow up with restaurant managers to ensure discrepancies are resolved
- Stay abreast of any changes in the hospitality wage order ( i.e. spread-of-hours pay, call-in-pay, sick leave regulations, overtime and tip pooling) to ensure proper payroll policies are communicated and corporate operations are equipped to properly enforce
- Perform external and internal payroll audits to ensure we are consistently adhering to company and legal standards
- Oversee the regular audit of W-4s, payroll balance sheets, and YTD earnings
- Provide thought leadership, training, and mentorship to direct reports and others across functional areas. Facilitate management and employee understanding of payroll procedures
- Collaborate with HR and business leaders across the organization, and support HR in communicating payroll strategy, issues, and changes
- Manage annual 401(k) audit
- Oversees timely and accurate tax reporting, health and welfare benefit system calculations, and funding
- Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions and continuing education initiatives
- Oversee all aspects of the year-end processing and W-2 preparation
- Assist and/ or complete additional tasks as assigned.
- Collaborate with tech department on the implementation of new payroll technologies
- Key stakeholder of payroll system (UKG)
- Oversees the development of weekly payroll reports including hours by position, bonus pay, overtime, productivity vs. non-productivity hours, PTO, etc. into a daily, weekly and monthly labor reports.
- Supports the development of productivity hours by position for each business and labor standards for each business.
- Partner with accounting to create the reports needed to track/manage labor
Required Requirements
- At least 8 years experience in payroll for hospitality, preferably working in a high-volume capacity across multiple states and jurisdictions.
- Experience with hospitality payroll or tip calculation required
- Must have experience processing payroll in New York, Nevada and California.
- Extensive knowledge of payroll-related software, UKG, required
- Experience in management and administration in a restaurant/hotel environment
- Proficient in Windows Office, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel
- Working experience in payroll tax at the federal, state, and local levels
- Prior payroll system management and system upgrade experience
- Must have strong leadership, management, and critical thinking skills
- Excellence in communication, change management, coaching, and presentation skills. Able to communicate in the English language, both verbally and in writing with staff, clients, and the general public
- Must have a high level of integrity and confidentiality with strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to develop, outline, interpret and implement new policies and controls, including Standard Operating Procedures
- Strong technology and process improvement background
- Must possess decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to direct others, handle various projects at one time, follow up and make accurate decisions
Preferred Qualifications
- 8 years experience in payroll processing in the hospitality industry, preferably working in a high-volume capacity across multiple states and jurisdictions
- Experience creating new payroll companies and rules for new store locations within payroll system
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and maintain strong relationships across all levels of an organization
- A proven track record of demonstrating strong leadership qualities, capable of fostering a positive and collaborative environment.
