Job Summary
The Unit Based Educator will assess, plan/develop, implement and evaluate learning/resource needs related to orientationand continuing education needs. Coordinates, develops and presents educational programs designed to maintain,enhance and assess job performance and competencies for employees. Support patient education initiatives asappropriate. Provides and delivers nursing care to patients. Utilizing the Nursing Process, the Registered Nurse willcoordinate total patient centered-care both meeting the physical, age specific, social and mental status, cultural andspiritual needs of the patients, and ensuring optimal care and service in accordance with physician orders, The JointCommission, OSHA, nursing and department guidelines. The Registered Nurse fulfills these duties to ensure continuityand quality of care, which fosters all patients and their families' best interest and well-being.
Responsibilities
Staff Education:
Conducts educational needs assessments to determine educational/competency needs of the staff. Coordinates remediation efforts because of competency or performance issues. Colloborates with Hospital Educators to receive staff education plans and helps facilitate plan on the unit. Evaluates and reports unit outcomes with Director/Manager. Acts as a department resource for clinical policies, procedures and protocols. Coordinates with Nursing Manager/Director to develop and present educational programs designed to maintain, enhance, and assess job performance and competencies for Nursing employees. Conducts educational needs assessments to determine educational/competency needs of staff. Addressing staff with educational needs, as they arise, and documentation of coaching/remediation provided. Evaluates and reports unit outcomes with Nurse Manager/Director. Supports patient education initiatives as appropriate. Conducts observations and takes a “hands on” approach to maintain knowledge of positions and assess needs of the staff and/or unit. Participates in the evaluation process by documenting performance of all staff members. Participates in review of activities or processes for area of responsibility and makes recommendations for improvement. Researches and recommends purchase of educational materials and equipment. Attends Monthly Staff Meetings and participates by reporting education updates at each staff meeting
Assessment:
Assesses individual and collective learning needs of staff, identifies training goals and outcomes. Participates in review of activities or processes for area of responsibility and makes recommendations for improvement. Researches and recommends the purchase of educational materials and equipment. Conducts educational needs assessments to determine unit based educational/competency needs of the staff.. Attends monthly staff meetings.
Orientation Program:
Coordinaotes Preceptor Program. Colloborates with Hospital Educator on new incoming employees. Assigns preceptors in collaboration with Director/Manager. Ensures preceptors are equipped with proper assessment and goal forms, and collects to review for proper documentation. Evaluates preceptors and makes recommendations for change as appropriate. Establishes goals for, and observes, orientees; provides orientees with feedback regularly. Informs Director of concerns regarding new orientees performance. Makes recommendations for remediation. In collaboration with Hospital Educators, ensures new hires attend, and successfully complete, orientation. Coordinates onboarding of new employees: Nurse manger will provide start dates of new hires, UBE will meet new clinical new hires for lunch on the Tuesday that they start in person/clinical orientation and provide them with their orientation schedule at this time: Time: 11:30am, Location: Education Room – 6th floor, Occurs: every other Tuesday for Clinical Hires. Assigns preceptors in collaboration with Nurse manager/director: Nurse manager/Director will provide UBE with list of preceptors, UBE will work with nurse manager/scheduling coordinators to prepare new hire schedule prior to new hire start date, UBE will give copy of orientation schedule to new hire during new hire lunch. Ensures new employees receive their CBO within 1st week of orientation on the floor: Report to nurse manager/director via email if new employee does not receive CBO in this timeframe. Schedule bi-weekly meetings to review CBO with all new hires (while they remain on orientation) and include: Employee, UBE, Nurse Manager. Provide all new employees with orientation schedule within the 1st week of hire. Provide all new employees with supplemental onboarding folder and review departmental procedures/policies, including: self-scheduling (once off orientation), Infor (punching in/out, downloading application to mobile phone, requesting time off), attendance policy and process for calling off. Informs Nurse Manager/Director of concerns regarding new employee performance and makes recommendations for remediation.
Planning and Design:
Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and/or safe practice. Delivers competence-based programs for nursing staff which includes demonstrated improvement of skills and retention of knowledge. Creates a learning climate that is not threatening or intimidating in all educational opportunities.
Professional Development and Growth:
Delivers competence-based programs for nursing staff which includes demonstrated improvement of skills and retention of knowledge. Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and/or safe practice. Supports staff development with educational activities (which include remediation, certification, mentoring, Joint commission requirements, product roll-outs, etc). Obtains specialty certification in relevant topic within 1 year of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of nursing normally acquired through specialized training or previous experience of three years. Demonstrated knowledge of staff development and program development. Excellent presentation skills, confidence, and poise in the training environment. Possesses group and team facilitation skills. Knowledge of accreditation standards, federal guidelines, healthcare organization standards and adult learning principles. Ability to communicate effectively with varied levels of staff. Effective interpersonal communication skills in order to effectively collaborate with physicians and instruct patients and their families. Knowledge of basic computer operations and use of word- processing and presentation software. Light Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. with a maximum lifting of 25 lbs.
