Job Summary:
The Director of Technology is a critical leadership role responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and management of all technology initiatives within the school district. This individual will lead the technology team, ensuring the effective and equitable integration of technology into teaching, learning, and administrative operations. The Director of Technology will collaborate closely with administrators, teachers, and staff to align technology strategies with the district's educational goals and student needs.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Planning:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive district-wide technology plan aligned with the educational vision and strategic goals.
- Identify and evaluate emerging educational technologies and trends, assessing their potential impact on teaching and learning.
- Create and manage the technology budget, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation and maximizing funding opportunities (e.g., E-rate).
- Develop and maintain technology roadmaps and project plans for infrastructure upgrades, software deployments, and professional development.
- Provide strategic guidance and recommendations to district leadership on technology-related matters.
Technology Operations & Infrastructure:
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the district's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, wireless access, and student devices.
- Ensure the security, reliability, and accessibility of all technology systems and data, prioritizing student safety and privacy.
- Manage IT support services, ensuring timely and effective resolution of technical issues for students, teachers, and staff.
- Implement and enforce IT policies and procedures, including acceptable use policies and data privacy regulations (e.g., FERPA, COPPA).
- Manage vendor relationships and contracts for hardware, software, and services.
- Oversee data backup and disaster recovery plans.
- Manage and maintain student information systems (SIS) and other educational software platforms.
Instructional Technology Integration:
- Collaborate with curriculum leaders and teachers to integrate technology effectively into classroom instruction.
- Provide professional development and training to teachers and staff on the use of educational technology tools and resources.
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate instructional software and hardware to support student learning.
- Support the implementation of online and blended learning initiatives.
- Ensure equitable access to technology for all students, including those with disabilities.
Team Leadership & Management:
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing technology team, including technicians, network administrators, and instructional technology specialists.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to team members.
- Recruit, hire, and onboard new technology talent.
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively.
Security & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations related to student data privacy and security.
- Develop and implement security policies and procedures to protect student and staff data and systems.
- Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.
- Manage security incidents and breaches, ensuring timely and effective response.
- Educate students, staff, and parents on digital citizenship and online safety.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- 10 years of proven experience in a technology leadership role, preferably in a K-12 educational setting.
- Ability to design, maintain and deploy stable core infrastructure elements of a multi site District.
- Experience with PowerSchool SIS.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing successful technology plans in schools.
- Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, educational technology, and cybersecurity in a K-12 environment.
- Experience with student information systems (SIS), learning management systems (LMS), and other educational software.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and translate educational needs into technology solutions.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Experience managing budgets and vendor relationships, including E-rate funding.
- Knowledge of relevant education technology standards and best practices (e.g., ISTE Standards).
- Able to assume responsibility with minimum of direct supervision.
- Have the technical skills, human relations skills, and educational background to coordinate technology efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with 1:1 device initiatives and digital learning environments.
- Certifications such as Google Certified Educator, Microsoft Certified Educator, or other relevant technology certifications.
- Experience with network security and data privacy in a K-12 setting.
- Knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility standards.
