Summary/Objective:
Phlebotomists are responsible for efficiently and accurately performing blood draws and transfusions on blood donors and patients, depending on their specific facility.
Essential Functions:
• Preparing patients before drawing blood
• Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
• Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
• Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
• Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
• Accurately updating patient information in the organizations database
• Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
• Working with supervising Physicians and following their directions at all times
Work Environment:
This position operates in a health care setting. This role requires regular walking to various
locations around the hospital. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and some mechanical equipment. The
employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of patient conditions and elements. The noise
level is moderate to quiet.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and listen.
This position and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a PRN position in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Rotating shifts as well as holidays and weekends are required. Working during inclement weather will be required. Shifts may vary, but working hours may be up to approximately 12 hours.
Travel:
No travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience:
• Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Successful completion of phlebotomy program from a community college or vocational- technical school
• Candidates should have an excellent grasp of medical terminology, human anatomy and testing procedures.
• Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
• Working with supervising Physicians and following their directions at all times
Preferred Education and Experience:
• Professional certification in phlebotomy from a recognized program such as the National
Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or the National Phlebotomy Association.
