PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The Trial Director (Audio Visual Technician) provides specialized support to the assistant district attorneys in the prosecution of defendants through the use of A/V equipment and court presentation software. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordinating with prosecutors and affiants in preparing and presenting evidence at court proceedings; maintaining audio/video equipment and supplies; operating audio/video equipment including Power Point, TrialDirector©, and similar software and hardware equipment; assisting in the organizing and presenting of evidence, witness testimony and experts. When preparing for and during the trial, the position will often be required to work weekends, early mornings and/or evenings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Audio/Visual Hardware/Software Responsibilities

  • Transporting, setting up and installing media equipment and audiovisual support tools, including, but not limited to speakers, monitors, cameras, projectors, computers and equipment racks.
  • Setting up and performing programming and basic construction according to schedule.
  • Running tests on videos, audio and signals and troubleshooting any problems that arise.
  • Meeting expectations by handling equipment malfunctions and executing a flawless event.
  • Disassembling equipment, wiring and support tools in a safe manner.
  • Performing inventory management on equipment, wiring and accessories.
  • Carrying out any cleaning, maintenance and repairs on audiovisual equipment.
  • Generating expense reports for management.

2. Pretrial Preparation

  • When a court hearing has been scheduled, the prosecutor will determine any a/v needs. The AV Technician will coordinate the upload and processing of any documents, audio, video needed for presentation. The AV Tech will assist the prosecutor in court with the presentation of said evidence to include providing for the documents, audio, video to be entered into the record on an appropriate medium.
  • When a case has been designated for trial by the prosecutor, the AV Tech will assist in gathering all the required documents from the discovery (evidence, photographs, video and transcripts) upload and organize them in TrialDirector©. The Trial Director software, installed on a laptop computer, is used to create witness workbooks. Each workbook is created by combining documents, audio/video or other multimedia based on an outline of the witness testimony. The evidence is projected upon multiple screens in the Courtroom during the proceeding. During the preparation of trial evidence, the AV Tech will be required to attend trial prep meetings with witnesses, prosecutors and potentially attend hearings regarding the admissibility of the evidence.
  • Coordinate the usage of audiovisual equipment among 12 assistant district attorneys.
  • Assist with any technology issues regarding PowerPoint, Trial Director and other presentation software.
  • Obtain discovery and evidential items from the ADA and his/her legal secretary.
  • Place all items to be used during trial into the system
  • Sync all audio and video that has been transcribed
  • Requires line by line syncing of audio with closed captioning.
  • Convert audio/visual items to formats compatible with Trial Director.
  • Meet with prosecutors and affiants in trial preparation meetings.
  • Participate in brainstorming trial ideas.
  • Coordinate with the prosecutor as to what items will be used and what witnesses are to be called and in what order during trial.
  • Assist the legal secretaries in communicating with and scheduling victims, lay witnesses and expert witnesses.
  • Organize all discovery/evidential items into 'workbooks" (folders), sorted by witness.
  • Print workbooks and other items to be presented during trial, as well as, prepare evidence for entry into the record during the trial.

3. Courtroom Services

  • Set up all equipment including monitors, projectors, laptops, cords etc.
  • Tape down all exposed wiring.
  • Upload last minute items to the system during trial.
  • Remain for the entirety of trial at counsel table and present exhibits on the TV/projector as planned.

i. Be prepared to project presentations 'on-the-fly' as either a mirror screen, presentation screen or a duplication of the primary computer screen.

ii. During presentations (the exhibiting of evidence) the operator will perform live functions such as zooming, highlighting or otherwise manipulating for best presentation.

  • Maintain a list of trial exhibits and witnesses.
  • Assist the prosecutor with secondary functions such as tracking down witnesses, collecting last minute evidence from law enforcement and experts,
  • Present admitted exhibits for defense during cross examination.
  • Trouble shoot any technology issues.

4. Post-trial Responsibilities

  • Teardown all equipment and return inventory to storage.
  • Inspect equipment for wear and functionality. Order replacement equipment when necessary.
  • Review trial performance and provide improvement recommendations in equipment and software during trial debriefings.

5. Daily Functions

  • Review trial lists, meet with prosecutors who have trials scheduled.
  • Determine the needs of each prosecutor regarding his/her upcoming trials. Identify cases:

i. That need no assistance

ii. Require assistance without the need for technologies

iii. Require minimal technology such as a video or audio player and projector.

iv. require the use of PowerPoint

v. require the use of TrialDirector©

  • Provide the level of support during trial as defined by the technology needed.
  • Attend all meetings between the prosecutor and the affiant.
  • When necessary attend meetings between the prosecutor, lay witnesses and expert witnesses.
  • Update TrialDirector© folders and files whenever changes (additions and deletions) are made.
  • Update witness contact lists.
  • Attend pre-trial hearings, take detailed notes.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other related duties as required by the District Attorney and First Assistant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate's Degree in audio visual technology or a related field. Strong working knowledge of audiovisual equipment and software. Excellent computer and troubleshooting skills. Creativity, attention to detail and flexibility. Strong communications and organizational skills. The ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Physical fitness to transport and set up semi heavy equipment. Good hearing and eyesight. Experience with PowerPoint and TrialDirector@.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, noise extremes, explosives, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
