TITLE: Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight for the district’s instructional and achievement programs, ensuring alignment with the district’s Strategic Plan. This position is responsible for leading and supervising high-level instructional leaders, managing policy implementation, and fostering an inclusive, high-performing learning environment for all students. The Assistant Superintendent oversees key district functions such as curriculum, instruction, assessment, and school-based leadership, while also ensuring effective engagement with families and community partners.
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated successful experience serving as a district and building-level public school district administrator
- WA State Superintendent endorsement
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or higher required in education, school administration, or curriculum and instruction
- 3 years of demonstrated successful principal experience in a public school
- WA State Teaching Certificate
- WA State Principal or Program Administrator Certificate
Special Requirements:
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
- I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
- HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
- Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct, coordinate, supervise, facilitate, oversee, and/or perform all tasks and elements needed to effect comprehensive curriculum and instructional programs designed to support high levels of student learning and overall academic achievement results
- Lead the district’s Learning and Teaching team in coordination of a dynamic learning environment responsible for the academic success of all students
- Provide leadership by ensuring a P-12 Guaranteed and Viable standards-based curriculum and instructional program for all content areas
- Guide and support schools through the School Improvement Plan (SIP) process, providing strategic direction and resources to address identified areas of growth and development
- Provide strong leadership in the implementation of professional learning communities, and the implementation and alignment of essential standards and state/district assessments
- Provide strong and collaborative leadership both within the Learning and Teaching Department, across other departments, and with schools to ensure coherent and effective implementation of all District functions
- Uphold and sustain a department culture conducive to continuous improvement and support of staff; provide ongoing professional development and training opportunities aligned with the needs of teachers and district leadership
- Facilitate student, family, and community engagement by maximizing opportunities to provide critical support for all students
- Directly oversees all district programs and budgets related to the implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment (i.e. Federal and State grant programs, local funding)
- Supervise principals as assigned
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Serves on a variety of committees; coordinates special projects
- Serves as a hearing officer as needed
- Serves as a Title IX Decision-Maker as needed
- Performs related duties as assigned
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
Responsible for performing problem analysis using widely prescribed principles and concepts. The position classification performs decision analysis and makes decisions that require the application and interpretation of data, facts, procedures, and policies. This is a semi-sedentary position classification and performs light work involving sitting a portion of the time, but does require walking and standing for extended periods. The job is performed with the majority of time spent indoors and under minimal temperature variations; a portion of the day may be spent outdoors and is subject to a variety of changing weather conditions and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces.
Additional physical requirements include the following:
- Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds;
- Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus;
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
- Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
This position is part of the District Level Administration group. The position will work a schedule of 260 days. Salary and benefits as determined by the current salary schedule. Employee is required to complete all mandatory district trainings by specified deadlines.

Performance shall be evaluated annually according to Board and administrative policies and procedures.
