POSITION SUMMARY

Diecast Tech is responsible to maintain the operation of the Diecast department on the corresponding production shift; this Job Description is applicable for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift Diecast Tech 1. The Diecast Tech 1 works with Diecast Tenders and more senior Diecast Technicians to keep diecast machines running at target cycle rates, producing quality cast parts from metal ingots. The Diecast Tech 1 must be able to complete all the responsibilities of the Diecast Tender; continually monitors machine operations, filling pots with metal ingots, clearing cast parts from collection totes, performing in-process inspections, and supplying the department and machines with the materials and resources required for safe, consistent operations. The Diecast Tech 1 ensures machines follow approved process sheet and cast parts meet specifications per part-specific QAP’s to ensure repeatable, acceptable quality diecast parts.

Essential duties include :

  • Adhere to all Safety & Environmental policies
  • Operate 4-slide, hot chamber diecast machines to produce diecast parts, according to approved process sheets
  • Perform machine control operations and advanced troubleshooting to start-up and shut-down machines ready for production; clear and clean part jams as required
  • Keep machine pots filled with metal (incoming as ingots), dross pots regularly during shift, clear cast parts from machine collection totes / buckets, fill lubrication reservoirs on diecast machines
  • Adhere to department schedule board for job prioritization; support company-wide on-time delivery goals
  • Perform in-process inspections to QAP specifications, using visuals, simple Go / No-go gaging, microscopes, loupes, calipers, micrometers, and other related dimensional inspection tools, to ensure quality of parts
  • Ensure all product meets quality specifications during in-process inspections according to product-specific Quality Assurance Plan (QAP)
  • Troubleshoot process, tooling, and / or machine to optimize non-conforming or poor-quality parts
  • Optimize casting process to reduce cycle times (improve productivity) while maintaining quality
  • Perform Set-ups and Teardowns (using SOP’s and checklists) to changeover tooling in diecast machines
  • Inspect, protect and store all tooling appropriately to prevent damage and ensure availability for set-up at next scheduled run
  • Accurately report daily production performance – production quantities by lot per job travelers, daily production report for OEE metrics
  • Complete any TWR’s and TDR’s to properly document and communicate all tooling-related issues
  • Follow good house-keeping practices to maintain cleanliness and organization of area, machines, equipment, tools, supplies, paperwork, files, and all other department-specific items
  • Maintain stock of department supplies, tooling, and material to support daily production
  • Maintain Diecast equipment and machinery in top condition
  • Perform minor maintenance on machines to keep operational. Includes, but not limited to; rebuilding and re-mounting cylinders (pneumatic and hydraulic), removing / installing Goosenecks, zinc pots, and / or plungers, replacing lubrication manifolds and lines, valves, piping, etc.
  • Complete daily, weekly, monthly, and other scheduled PM tasks to verify safe and effective operation of all equipment
  • Assist other production departments with projects tasks when required; typically Value Added (VA), Vibe, Packaging, and / or Shipping

  • Must maintain focus to monitor production feedback in real-time and make adjustments as-necessary to ensure quality and schedule objectives are met
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous improvement in the Diecast Department as well as all company operations; must use and support the ICAR system

    Education and Experience :

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3 to 5 years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in diecasting, machining, metal finishing, and / or related industrial manufacturing environments is a plus.
  • Licenses / Certification :

  • None required.
  • Skills / Knowledge :

  • Must possess or gain a thorough understanding of the processes employed by our client and must understand the industry sectors where our client's operate. Must have a complete understanding of company policies and procedures.
  • Good organization and time management skills are required to prioritize work appropriately to meet deadlines.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to apply critical thinking to solve technical problems, are required.
  • Must be able to use basic measuring devices; Go / No-go gages, vernier calipers, micrometers, microscopes, or other dimensional measurement tools.
  • Must be able to operate scales in English units (pounds) and count parts by weight.
  • Must be able to use basic hand tools (ie. wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, drills, hammers, mallets, etc.).
  • Physical :

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Body Positions : The position requires standing, walking and reaching with hands and arms for up to 8 hours. Balance and climbing are also required. Body movements of turning the head and torso, twisting, bending, lifting, placing, reaching, pulling, pushing and flexing the arms are required. Employee will be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and / or crawl at times.
  • Body Senses : The employee is required to have good vision, both at close range and at distance, and be able to accurately identify colors. Good hearing is required to identify audible alarms and changes to normal process sounds. The employee must speak well to communicate with coworkers and management. Sense of touch, good motor skills and dexterity is required to handle parts, inspect using appropriate measurement tools, and work on process equipment / machines.
  • Strength :

  • Must have the ability to regularly lift and / or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds with available lifting equipment.
  • Must be able to pull or push skids up to 2,000 LBS using a pallet jack.
  • Mental :

  • Demonstrated competency in the English Language (read, write and speak) is required. Must be able to read, interpret, and understand simple written and oral instructions. Must be able to write simple correspondence and daily production metrics (for production reports and travelers).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals is required.
  • Ability to interpret read and interpret bar and line graphs, x-bar / r charts, SQC / SPC plots and data, to draw meaningful conclusions is a plus.
  • Must be able to effectively present information, respond to questions, and communicate with managers and internal employees.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold or heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to precarious places and must access material at heights up to 12 feet using provided equipment. The noise level in the department is loud due to operating machines, requiring constant ear protection.
  • Eye and ear protection is required. All applicable safety regulations must be followed at all times.
  • AUTHORITY & ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Authority : This position holds no supervisory responsibilities. The Diecast Tech 1 regularly directs the Diecast Tender(s) to support shift operations; tending running machines and moving materials.
  • Accountability : The Diecast Tech 1 is directly accountable to the Plant Manager. The Diecast Tech 1 regularly follows direction from more senior Diecast Technicians to support shift operations. #PRO360
