Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Laboratory Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory procedures and possess knowledge in physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology.
Responsibilities:
_Performs venipunctures and finger punctures to obtain specimens for laboratory procedures.
- Enters tests requisitions in the computer appropriately.
- Communicates appropriate reports and assignments to co-workers. Follows up with team members during the shift.
- Maintains test tray and working areas in a sanitary condition.
- Receives and reviews physician’s orders; ensures transcription and order entry are accurate. Follows through to ensure orders are carried out.
- Requests/ orders supplies as necessary in order to keep materials in stock at all times.
- Answers telephone, paging system, and anticipates patients’ needs. Responds as appropriate.
- Processes STAT specimens in a timely manner, communicating with Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) as to their status.
- Assists CLS when requested.
- Labels and records all test tubes, files paperwork as required, processes “send out tests.”
- Delivers reports to the units/floor and files on the chart.
- Maintains log sheets according to established procedures.
- Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
- Manages and operates patient care equipment safely and correctly.
- Demonstrates defined practice patterns for the control and prevention of contamination.
- Maintains defined practice standards for the control of hazardous waste and for infection control standards.
- Work with nursing staff to perform correlation studies on the Glucometer and i.Stat.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- Certificate of Completion from an accredited school in phlebotomy techniques.
- Training and certification in phlebotomy techniques according to the State guidelines that require a phlebotomist to be recertified and licensed by the State.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) months training under the direct supervision of a Clinical Lab Scientist.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
