What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Field Technician position at Montani Consulting?
This is not your typical job posting. I was looking through comparable jobs, and it made me sad. Most of these job listings are “canned” and full of buzzwords. If I was looking for a new job, these posts wouldn’t excite me. So, here is my attempt to find you…the right person for our team. There is only one of you out there, and I am looking forward to meeting you.
At Inland Geodetics, we pride ourselves on providing accurate, timely, and reliable professional Land Surveying services. With over 20 years in the industry, we are a privately-owned, survey-only small business specializing in infrastructure projects for municipalities and civil engineers in the Central Texas Region.
Not only are we passionate about the work we do - but also the team we have cultivated. If you work here, we can guarantee you'll be respected, treated like a professional, trusted, and given the opportunity to learn, grow, and advance to your fullest potential at work and in life.
We are expanding quickly and looking for an Entry-Level Field Technician to join our tight-knit group. This role will work alongside a Senior Survey Field Technician (Party Chief) to ensure accurate data processing for client projects. No previous experience is required!

Who we are:
- We are a group of coworkers who like the outdoors, history, math, Texas, and we happen to do surveys to make a living.
- We are large enough for stability but small enough to be scrappy and flexible.
- We are growing and will continue to grow.
- We plan on running this business for decades with the same team and the same customers built around great people and great systems.
- We will eventually be the region's premier and most respected infrastructure survey firm. It will take us a decade, but we will get there.
- We like to laugh, and we laugh often.
- We don’t like corporate bureaucracy; we simply trust people instead.
- We pay really well.
- 100% company paid premiums for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
- Generous paid time off.
- We want you to be able to retire, so we have a Simple IRA with up to 3% match.
- We like education so we have Tuition reimbursement for survey-related classes.
In a typical day, you will:
- Arrive at 7:00 a.m. ready to roll.
- Check-in with your Party Chief and help load up gear, plan for the day, and get out the door.
- In the field, you will use a variety of surveying instruments to support your survey party in their daily mission (chainsaws, levels, total stations, GPS, etc.).
- You will be under the mentorship of a Party Chief. They will train you, but they will also have you carry the heavy stuff and do the hard things.
- You will sometimes be in beautiful fields, among the trees and animals…and sometimes you will be in downtown Austin navigating traffic to get the job done.
- Over time you’ll learn about instruments, how to sketch field notes, how to identify trees, math skills, and various other pioneer skills.
- You will come back to the office by 3:00 p.m. to debrief the Project Manager (Registered Professional Land Surveyor), unload gear, and prep for the next day. We’re usually out of here by 3:30 to 4:00.
Who you should be:
- You have zero to a few years of experience in survey (pay will be commensurate).
- You are outdoorsy and don’t mind being outside all day.
- You are tired of working at jobs where the people don’t really care about the team or the performance.
- You may be tired of your job at an engineering firm that doesn’t respect surveyors.
- You like to be around excellence. You like to see the team exceed.
- You like to be around A-players.
- You like to work hard and see your talents used to their fullest.
- You want to find a place where you can hang your hat for the long term.
- You’re willing to travel up to 10% if needed. We usually take volunteers first.
We’d also love it if you have:
- Knowledge in the principles and performance of basic types of surveys, survey computations, and field operations…but if you have too much, then apply for our Senior Survey Field Technician position, it pays better.
