SUMMARY :

Reporting to the Director of Digital Communications, the Social Media Manager is responsible for day-to-day management of the University’s institutional-level social media presence. This role creates content, monitors user responses, engages followers, tracks metrics, coordinates with other social media content creators across campus, and recommends strategies for increasing the impact and effectiveness of social media. The Social Media Manager also assists with dissemination of public information during emergencies or crisis situations and serves as a back-up to the news media relations team when circumstances warrant.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Execute institutional-level social media strategy by producing, launching and monitoring creative content daily.

  • Perform daily monitoring of social media user responses and engage with audience commentary.

  • Offer data-informed recommendations for content strategies on a channel-by-channel basis.

  • Produce a variety of written and visual content, and source content from colleagues within University Communications and across the institution.

  • Monitor institutional accounts and other social accounts for any potential issues or problems and report these promptly to the supervisor.

  • Monitor social media accounts across the University (i.e. colleges, departments, programs, etc.) and inform the supervisor of any potential problems or issues observed on those channels.

  • Lead social media listening projects, monitor University-related mentions and engage where appropriate (for positive posts), as well as inform the supervisor promptly about negative posts.

  • Monitor other social media channels that have similar goals and target audiences, and ideate new social media content based on observations of what works and what are the emerging trends.

  • Serve as liaison with other campus content creators and social media managers to help assure there is a unified voice consistent with established messages, brand standards and social media best practices

  • Analyze and report on social media trends, best practices and relevant developments in the higher education sector

  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports of key metrics for each channel, including analysis of what is driving any observed trends or patterns, and offer suggestions for enhancing channel effectiveness.

  • Provide back up support for news media relations during a crisis/emergency, or when there is a special need for back up coverage.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS :

REQUIRED :

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of two years of relevant social media experience.

  • Experience creating, posting and scheduling social media across multiple platforms.

  • Understanding of social media best-practices.

  • An understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

PREFERRED :

  • Advanced training in social media principles and practices.

  • Portfolio of work (professional, student, or personal) that demonstrates the candidate’s understanding of social media strategy and tactics.

  • Experience monitoring social media accounts.

  • Experience with social media management tools (e.g. Falcon.io, Hootsuite, Sprout).

  • Experience conducting social listening projects.

  • Knowledge of video editing software and creative design platforms (e.g. canva, Photoshop).
