Description
The Director of Athletics is a critical member of the school's Executive Leadership Team, serving in a full-time (12-month) capacity. Reporting to the Assistant Head of School, the Director shares responsibility for the school's educational leadership alongside the Executive Leadership Team. They engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including coaches, faculty/staff, students, families, the school community, and the Board of Trustees, to develop and implement the school's athletics program.
The Director of Athletics is responsible for several key areas. These include ensuring MVC’s mission, vision, and values are reflected through the athletic program, fostering a positive overall culture and climate, and ensuring student-athlete development in collaboration with other teams at MVC. Additionally, the Director prioritizes professional development for themself and the entire coaching staff. Community engagement, compliance with regulations, and ensuring the future health of the athletic program are also crucial aspects of this position.

Requirements
General Administrative Responsibilities
- Program Oversight and Management
- Be responsible for all administrative matters directly related to athletics.
- Cooperate with the Assistant Head of School and Executive Leadership Team on school-wide matters.
- Serve on relevant committees as appointed.
- Plan and supervise special activities and events related to the athletic program.
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders regarding athletics.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Head of School.
- Familiar with industry scheduling programs such as Final Forms as well as Arbiter programs and Sports Recruit preferred.
- Budget & Finance
- Develop and oversee the annual athletics budget in cooperation with the Assistant Head of School and COO and in consultation with the athletic staff.
- Marketing & Communication
- Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Communications to secure media coverage for athletics.
- Develop merchandise for the school store in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team.
- Facilities & Equipment
- Work with facilities personnel to ensure the readiness of all facilities and equipment for all sports.
- Community Engagement
- Ensure athletic representation at school-wide events, including admissions and others throughout the year as needed.
League Duties
- League Participation
- Participate in committees as assigned within the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL).
- Attend PCAL Athletic Director Committee (ADC) meetings.
- CIF/CCS Compliance
- Ensure timely completion of responsibilities related to the California Interscholastic Federation/Central Coast Section (CIF/CCS) including eligibility lists, tournament fees, and required forms.
- Game Management
- Coordinate athletic events with opposing school athletic directors and officials.
- Recordkeeping
- Maintain accurate records for teams and athletes.
Athletics Personnel
- Coaching Staff
- In collaboration with school leadership, screen applications, interview, and hire qualified coaching staff aligned with the school's mission and values.
- Supervise, guide, and support the Assistant Athletic Director, athletic and coaching staff.
- Provide the coaching staff with information regarding professional development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Relationships & Communication
- Ability to develop positive and collaborative working relationships with students, parents/guardians, faculty/staff, coaches, league officials, regional athletic directors, and the wider community.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and planning skills.
- Leadership & Vision
- Demonstrated leadership in athletics.
- Clear commitment to MVC values and philosophy, especially as it relates to athletics.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and cultivate a healthy environment for student, coach, and colleague success.
- Preferred Experience & Education
- Minimum of 5 years of teaching/coaching or administrative experience, with familiarity with independent school culture.
- Bachelor's Degree required (in a related field, preferred).
- CAA, Administrative Credential or Master’s degree, preferred.

- Promotes student wellbeing by fostering a balance between extracurricular activities, academics, and mental health.
- Certified in CPR as well as first aid or must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 25lbs.
- Ability to sit, stand, bendamd/or squat, perhaps for prolonged periods of time.
- Work outside at times, over multiple terrains, and in varying temperatures.

At Will Employment
Employee understands and acknowledges that, unless otherwise defined by applicable law, any employment relationship with MVC is of an “at will” nature, which means that the Employee may resign at any time and the Employer may discharge Employee at any time, with or without cause. It is further understood that this “at will” employment relationship may not be changed by any written document or by conduct, unless the MVC Head of School specifically acknowledges such change in writing.
