POSITION INFORMATION
This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year. GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and services a wide variety of diesel, gasoline, propane and natural gas-powered school buses, heavy and light trucks and vans, construction equipment and automobiles; operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Vehicle Maintenance Technician is a full journey-level class responsible for maintaining, repairing and servicing a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment. The District's fleet contains large and small passenger buses, heavy and light trucks and vans, motorized construction equipment and automobiles.
Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Diagnoses and performs major and minor repairs and overhauls to engines, involving inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts such as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, fittings, wrists pins, gaskets, etc.; inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems involving repair and replacement of such parts as carburetors, fuel pumps, spark plugs, starter motors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, wiring switches, batteries, radiators, thermostats, water pumps, etc.
Diagnoses, repairs and adjusts steering mechanisms and other controls, checking and aligning wheels.
Performs safety inspections on school buses to comply with relevant laws, codes and regulations.
Inspects, services and repairs vehicle braking systems.
Repairs vehicle body and chassis parts, using hand and power tools, electric arc and oxyacetylene welding equipment.
Road tests vehicles; drives buses, trucks, vans or equipment as required; inspects vehicles in the shop and field.
Services and repairs vehicle air-conditioning systems.
Diagnoses engine electronic computer using diagnostic scope.
Inspects, services, and adjusts vehicle smog control systems.
Diagnoses and performs electrical, hydraulic and other repairs in the field.
Performs preventive maintenance work on school buses, construction equipment, heavy and light trucks and vans, back-hoes, automobiles, and other equipment.
Reads and interprets manuals, drawings and specifications.
Estimates labor, material and equipment required to complete assignments.
Diagnoses, repairs and maintains vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems and associated power take-off equipment.
Modifies and fabricates new parts for vehicle bodies and similar equipment; performs skilled electric and oxyacetylene welding tasks in repairing and modifying vehicles.
Installs and repairs power take-off equipment such as electric cranes, hoists and hydraulic lift equipment.
Inspects, services, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of engines on motorized and shop equipment.
Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and rough drawings.
Ensures proper safety precautions are observed.
Performs and applies preventive maintenance and service work, including tune-ups, checking and replenishing fluid levels, replacing hoses, belts, batteries, wiper blades, bulbs, lamps; may clean vehicles and engine compartment.
Maintains shop equipment and fuel station, compressor, and unleaded and diesel fuel islands.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of :
Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field, including hydraulic systems.
Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to work.
Use and operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials.
Shop mathematics; practices and procedures of shop and field welding.
Welding properties of various metals and alloys.
Lubrication systems, including oils and greases used in servicing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
Federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the maintenance, repair and safety of school buses.
Ability to :
Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work, including shoplifts.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
Prepare basic records and reports.

Education, Training, and Experience :
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is two years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of light-, medium- and heavy-duty gasoline, diesel, or natural gas-powered motorized equipment; or some combination of education, training and experience that produces the requisite knowledge and ability.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements :
Passenger Endorsement ("P") must be obtained within forty-five (45) working days of placement, and maintained for the duration of the assignment.
ASE certification is desirable.
