If you are interested in working for the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, we invite qualified candidates to apply for our part time Child Welfare Caseworker position within Child Welfare Services .

What You'll Be Doing

This position provides services to Child Welfare Services clients.

  • The primary case workload will consist of one of the following: investigations/child protective services, family preservation/in-home services, foster care/kinship/adoption, resource/foster homes.
  • Other caseload assignments may include screening abuse/neglect reports; completing home studies for and/or supporting foster/adoptive families; and/or handling other specialized projects and responsibilities.
  • Duties include but are not limited to: conducting home, school and community visits with children and families, writing reports and case plans/service agreements, implementing and monitoring service agreements; supervising parent-child visits; collaborating with professional and community resources such as hospitals, schools, and other providers; preparing court reports and testifying; and, maintaining files and statistics, electronically and manually, as required.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment and requires ordinary physical effort associated with sitting at a desk, walking, standing, and/or driving an automobile. Visits to clients’ homes have the potential for confrontation with unpredictable or aggressive individuals and appropriate measures are practices to deal with such conditions. The work requires a flexible work schedule with some evening hours.
  • Home visits may require lifting a child into a car seat, moving an infant car seat with an infant in the seat), pushing/lifting a stroller, walking of stairs in apartment buildings; moving items from one foster home to another foster home when a child changes placements, carrying necessary items for a client (food, clothing, etc.), the delivery of essential items (pack-n-plays, diapers, etc.) to a client. Additionally, this position may require the set-up and break-down of events to includ e lifting light boxes, moving chairs, etc etera .

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of professional experience in casework management which included short term counseling of individuals in the areas of family relationships and personal adjustments/development.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Counseling , Psychology, Social Work or a related field.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

License

  • Following appointment, successful completion of Maryland State mandated pre-service training and

competency testing will be required for continuation in this class.

Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class C (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence when required for job-related duties.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

We will use interview preference criteria:

  • Experience and knowledge in client case management.
  • Experience working with children and family systems.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Experience in, and knowledge of, community resources and services for children and families.
