Job Summary:
A Secondary Assistant Principal supports the school by providing guidance, leadership, collaboration, teacher support, academic growth and achievement, and student behavior management for the secondary school. The assistant principal reports to the secondary principal, and helps to promote the mission and vision of the school under the principal’s leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Designated Teachers, Staff Members, and the Student Body
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Student Discipline and Welfare: Handle student behavior and discipline issues, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students. Develop programs that promote positive behavior and student well-being. Collaborate with team members when working with discipline and safety.
- Curriculum Development and Teacher Support: Assist in the development and implementation of school curricula. Provide support to teachers through observation, feedback, and professional development opportunities.
- Administrative Duties: Participate in the management of school operations, including budgeting, scheduling, and maintaining school records. Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
- Assessment and Student Services Support: Oversee the implementation and scheduling of standardized testing while offering support for student services and special education.
- Parent and Community Engagement: Foster strong relationships with parents and the community. Communicate effectively with parents about school matters and involve them in school activities.
- Staff Supervision: Oversee the activities of teaching and administrative staff. Conduct teacher/staff observations and performance evaluations and encourage staff development.
- Student Activities: Coordinate or oversee extracurricular activities, ensuring they contribute positively to the student's educational experience.
- Crisis Management: Respond to crises and emergencies. Implement, conduct, and maintain safety assessments and safety plans for the school.
- Committees and Projects: Lead and organize specific committees and projects as needed.
- School events: Plan and attend school events, such as parent informational sessions, school dances, awards ceremonies, graduation, etc.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Educational Background: Typically requires a Master’s degree in Education Administration or a related field.
- Experience: Previous teaching experience and some administrative or leadership experience in an educational setting are usually required.
- Decision-Making Ability: Capable of making quick, effective decisions.
- Empathy and Compassion: Must have a genuine concern for students, staff, and teachers.
- Adaptability: Able to adapt to changing circumstances and various challenges.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and challenges.
Education & Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Education or related field
- Administration License in Progress (through an accredited licensure program or the state)
- Administration License
