What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor position at Moraine Valley Community College?
Duties
Working within the Academic Advising Center, Academic Advisors :
- Provide educational information about college academic programs and services for prospective and currently enrolled students,
- Orient new students toward an informed and successful start to their college experience during New Student Orientation sessions,
- Assist students in assessing their interests and abilities by examining their educational goals in alignment with Moraine Valley programs of study and transfer options,
- Interpret and reviews college placement examinations, Advanced Placement (AP), ACT / SAT scores, IB, CLEP, and transfer coursework to ensure proper course selection,
- Provide accurate and timely information related to Career Programs, Health Sciences, and transfer courses,
- Demonstrate knowledge about educational, institutional, corporate and community resources, as well as other college-wide programs and services, and
- Present on Academic Advising services to classes, groups of students, parents, or staff will be expected.
Education / Experience Bachelor’s degree and related experience, training, and knowledge in individual and group advising related to the academic and personal development of college students required.
Previous academic advising and community college experience preferred. Qualifications This position requires a strong commitment to student-centered learning that focuses on the development and success of the learner. Candidates should possess knowledge of academic advising theories and practice that support teaching and learning.
Prior experience working with diverse students that includes various levels of academic preparedness, multicultural and linguistic diversity, and economic status is required. Individuals with fluency in more than one language are encouraged to apply.
