Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Bus Operator
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED.
Hold classification title in category of employment or meet the definition of the job title pursuant to WV Code 18-4-8c.
Possess the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully carry out responsibilities of the position.
REPORTS TO: School Bus Supervisor
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Becomes thoroughly familiar with the contents of the West Virginia Transportation Regulations for school bus operators.
2. Posts in the bus a copy of the Regulations for Pupils Transported in School Buses and a copy of the bus schedule.
3. Passes the physical and driving tests required.
4. Performs pre-trip inspections daily.
5. Prepares and keeps a list of students riding the bus.
6. Discharges students only at designated stops unless permission is granted by the principal or a note of permission from the parent or guardian.
7. Allows students who are not assigned to his/her bus to board only if permission has been granted by the principal or by a note of request from the parent or guardian.
8. Runs on a regular schedule and reports to the principal or supervisor any reasons for delay.
9. Keeps person neat and clean.
10. Leaves school only after checking that all children are loaded.
11. Cleans thoroughly inside and outside of bus as directed by the transportation supervisor.
12. Does not allow students to extend any part of their body out of the bus windows.
13. Practices emergency unloading procedures at least twice per year.
14. Does not leave bus with motor running. Has brakes set any time when leaving the bus.
15. Prohibits smoking on school buses (includes adults) at all times.
16. Completes first aid course successfully.
17. Makes sure all emergency equipment, such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, chains, flares, axe, etc are on bus and in good condition.
18. Completes all required reports on date requested.
19. Follows the Morgan County Discipline Policy.
20. Is available for emergency school closings.
21. Reports any accident or damage to bus immediately to the transportation supervisor.
22. Reports needed repairs to mechanic.
23. Follows railroad crossing procedures.
24. Maintains positive work habits.
25. Performs duties efficiently and productively.
26. Maintains and/or upgrades skills.
27. Performs other duties assigned by the transportation supervisor.
**An attempt will be made to secure parking for the bus at a secure location as close to the start of the run as possible. 8/8/88
