Job Summary
Supervise the safe and efficient operation of the Maintenance Department within a manufacturing facility. Plans and directs the maintenance and preventive maintenance process, including production/processing support, environmental compliance, quality control, and maintenance. Accountable for all maintenance activities associated with a high-paced facility and closely supervise the maintenance staff and the quality of their work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Accountable for the maintenance staff to comply with Morton safety, environmental, and health rules and regulations.
- Accountable for salt storage, solar salt screening and rock salt bagging, site maintenance, and reliability coordination.
- Maintaining an effective preventive maintenance program.
- Supports production department to meet plant goals and commitments.
- Works closely with production to maintain good production and maintenance coordination.
- Handles special project assignments.
- Monitors performance of direct reports and ensures accurate maintenance hour reporting against work orders.
- Maintenance of the facility's buildings, grounds, utilities, and equipment.
- Directly involved in the hiring and disciplining of personnel for the Maintenance Department.
- Enforces the facility Attendance Policy for the department
- Coordinates services and materials required for maintenance work.
- Works with vendors on cost and availability and enters requisitions to obtain needed parts and services.
- Arranges for rental equipment for plant needs.
- Works with the Storeroom Administrator to maintain adequate spare parts inventory and parts to support the operation.
- Coordinates contractors for all repairs beyond the capability and availability of in-house Maintenance staff. (Major welding, electrical, or structural repairs).
- Helps with department budgeting for parts, services, and hourly labor. Reports variances beyond budget
- Utilizes SAP and management tools to manage the preventive maintenance program for the production equipment, building maintenance, mobile equipment, and plant accessories.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Has a strong floor presence in the operation to monitor the maintenance staff's quality and timeliness of work.
- Works to ensure the maintenance department supports production operations and scheduling
- Supervises employee and labor relations matters in conjunction with Human Resources, as appropriate.
- Schedule staff to maintain production coverage during employee absences and staffing changes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, other related technical degree, or equivalent experience
- Proven experience as a Maintenance Manager in an industrial setting, preferably in a packing and processing operation or similar environment.
- Preferred 3-5 years maintenance supervision in manufacturing and packaging operation.
- Experience in a union environment preferred
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Demonstrates background knowledge of PM’s and maintenance procedures.
- Computer Skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
- SAP knowledge is preferred
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Proficient in using maintenance management software and tools.
- Good understanding of safety regulations and compliance requirements.
Work Environment
- This position requires an individual who can handle the stress of a fast-paced packaging and processing operation, responding to repairs on short notice and during off-hours.
- Is flexible when scheduling maintenance work to match production demands and schedules.
- Works in a combination of office work and standing for prolonged periods, performs office or clerical duties, including using office tools, frequently travels between office and plant environments of varied temperatures and humidity, climbs stairs, and wears personal protective equipment, as required.
- Works in a manufacturing and packaging plant environment, requiring significant walking and travel in a large facility.
