Food Pantry Assistant

Status: Part-time - 21 hours per week

Reports to: Food Pantry Coordinator

Hourly salary: $21 - $25 commensurate with education and experience

Schedule: Morning Shift, Monday to Friday, 9am - 2pm

The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) is the largest not-for-profit provider of quality education, employment, and health and recreation programs in the impoverished neighborhoods of the North Bronx, serving the needs of more than 35,000 residents each year. Position Summary:

The Food Pantry Assistant is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of a food pantry, ensuring that clients have access to nutritious food and essential items. This position involves helping with inventory management, food sorting and distribution, maintaining a clean and organized pantry, and providing excellent customer service to individuals and families in need. The Food Pantry Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of the pantry and contributing to its efficient operation.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities:

  • Inventory Management: Assist with receiving, sorting, and organizing food donations. Ensure that items are properly stored and rotated (using FIFO – First In, First Out).
  • Food Distribution: Help distribute food and other essential items to pantry clients, ensuring that the process is efficient, respectful, and meets clients' needs.
  • Client Assistance: Provide customer service by assisting clients in selecting appropriate food items based on availability, dietary needs, and household size.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of food inventory, donations, and distributions as required for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Cleanliness & Organization: Ensure the pantry space remains clean, organized, and safe, following health and safety regulations.
  • Collaborating with Team: Work with fellow pantry staff and volunteers to ensure that operations run smoothly and that clients receive the support they need in a timely manner.
  • Supporting Outreach and Events: Assist with special food distribution and community outreach events when needed.

Required skills/dispositions:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field required.
  • Reliable, organized, flexible and punctual.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and school staff.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with proven ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals both in person and over the phone.
  • Spanish speaking is preferred but not required.
  • Must have excellent organizational, time management and follow-up skills.
  • Responsible and professional conduct.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to move boxes and bags of food, often weighing up to 30-50 pounds.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google suite.
