Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Educator is a Registered Professional Nurse, who promotes professional development of Nursing/Clinical staff through the educational process. The Clinical Nurse Educator assesses, plans, coordinates, teaches and evaluates educational programs designed to meet identified/anticipated learning needs: provides educational intervention that enhances growth and supports the nursing/clinical staff to provide high quality care to the patients of Mount Desert Island Hospital.

The Educator is responsible and held accountable for the following functions:

Educator:

  1. Incorporate principles of adult learning and planning in the planning, implementation and evaluation of education programs;
  2. Coordinate orientation of clinical nursing team members to the organization;
  3. Develop and coordinate education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation;
  4. Plan, prepare, and maintain materials for use in educational programs for accuracy and relevance to the target audience;
  5. Adjust content and teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs;
  6. Deliver competence based programs for nursing staff with a focus upon improvement of skills and retention of knowledge;
  7. Develop evidenced based materials;
  8. Support nursing team members with educational activities including remediation, certification mentoring, new equipment;
  9. Prepare long and short term planning and programs to address identified needs.

The Consultant:

  1. Serve as educational consultant to facilities, task forces, committees and projects relating to policy, procedure and program development;
  2. Respond to regulatory mandates for research and management of sentinel events;
  3. Collaborate with inter-disciplinary team members to recommend educational strategies for the implementation of clinical standards that meet and/or exceed the standards set forth in the ANA Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice.

The Researcher:

  1. Supports the integration of research into practice;
  2. Incorporates current educational evidence into individual practice as a staff development expert;
  3. Interpret, communicate and incorporate research findings into program planning.

The Facilitator:

  1. Identify and recruit internal and external resources as experts in the field for educational opportunities;
  2. Participate in committees, task forces and projects;
  3. Facilitate teambuilding and development;
  4. Coordinate educational activities including educational programs, clinical affiliations, and nurse residency and student partnerships.

The Change Agent:

  1. Respond to changes in nursing practice and develop programs to support those changes;
  2. Ensure that educational programs are congruent with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and goals:
  3. Maintain flexibility when managing multiple roles and responsibilities;
  4. Promote a safe and healthy work environment.

The Leader:

  1. Serve as a role model to promote excellence and safety;
  2. Maintain required educational and/or clinical competencies;
  3. Seek opportunities to develop team members in various roles.

Requirements

Education, Training or Certifications Required:

  1. Annual BLS, ACLS certification.
  2. Graduate of NLN certified RN program or collegiate BSN program.
  3. Current Maine RN Licensure.
  4. Specialty certification preferred.
  5. Masters preferred.


Experience Required:

  1. Global Nursing Experience with knowledge of critical care.
  2. Clinical instruction.
  3. Customer Service skills.


Special Requirements:

Computer skills to include Word, Power Point and familiarity with Electronic Health Care Records and documentation.


Cognitive Requirements:

  1. Emotional maturity and excellent people skills required.
  2. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced outpatient environment.
  3. Possess basic computer skills.


Physical Demands:

  1. Able to sit, stand, or walk for eight hours.
  2. Able to perform under stress.
  3. Has adequate hearing, vision, speech and manual dexterity.


Environment:

  1. Potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, and contagious diseases.
  2. Office work hazards.
