Job Description:
The Facilities Management department supports the administration, faculty, staff and students in the quality planning and development of facilities projects that support our mission. Our talented staff of approximately 140 FTEs Cleaning, Mechanical Trades, Central Heating Plant, Grounds, Paint, Carpentry, Stockroom, EH&S, Fleet Services, and Mail Services) are responsible for more than 2,000,000 SF of property in over 60 major buildings and for maintaining more than 300 acres.
The responsibilities include the daily operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant boilers, pumps, temperature control system and boiler water treatment as well as preventative maintenance on the associated equipment.

Job Description:

The responsibilities include the daily operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant boilers, pumps, temperature control system and boiler water treatment as well as preventative maintenance on the associated equipment.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Operate the plant in accordance with Massachusetts CMR522 Board of Boiler Rules.
- Review and complete daily log reading of gas fuel, steam generated, domestic water usage and calculating plant efficiency to comply with state environmental records.
- Blow down water columns, glasses, low water cut outs and blow high water alarms to assure they are working properly.
- Collect daily water samples to test boiler water fed chemistry.
- Every two hours check all equipment for proper operation and safety requirement by the State of Massachusetts.
- Consult with outside vendors and contractors as needed to assist with repairs and oversee the repairs.
- Respond to any emergency involving natural gas, electricity, fuel oil, high pressure steam, compressed air and domestic water in the building.
- Operate the cogeneration steam turbine at maximum efficiency.
- Monitor smoke opacity alarms D.E.P. required.
- Test safety valves required by Insurance company- twice a year.
- Perform pipe fitting and preventive maintenance as required during summer shut down.
- Ensure all boilers and condensate, feed water tanks are drained and clean for inspection.
- Do all necessary repairs and mechanical work as needed during summer shut down in accordance to M.C.L-522 CMR.
- Responsible for shift coverage 24-7.
- Assist the HVAC department when needed and during summer shut down.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must have a Massachusetts Second Class Steam Engineer license.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in modern power plant, operating turbine generators and with routine boiler maintenance.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, be willing to work overtime and have familiarity with routine boiler maintenance.
- Possess the theory, application and experience in the operation and maintenance of power plant auxiliary equipment.

Working Conditions:
- Employee handles a range of hazardous materials, including cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- May have contact with chemicals and fumes, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and extreme weather related to heat or cold.
- Must occasionally work in high and precarious places.
- Noise level in some work environments can occasionally be loud.
- Balancing, carrying, pulling/pushing, grasping, repetitive movement, standing, bending, reaching, sitting, twisting and lifting.
- Ability to physically perform manual tasks, climb stairs, lift, climb ladders, and bend.
- Ability to lift (50) pounds unassisted, able to stoop or stand for prolonged periods of time.
