Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Basic Job Purpose/Function

Supports instructor in a multi-level Spanish GED class. Assists students in preparing for the GED exam by helping students improve their academic achievement in math, language arts, social studies, and science by reinforcing, reviewing and clarifying course-specific learning objectives and by providing study skills’ strategies; reviews course materials, assignments and exam materials, ideas for papers and course assignments; works on solutions to individual learning challenges.

Essential Duties

  • Under guidance from instructor, provides academic assistance to students that supports MHCC course content and instructional methods.
  • Supports effective instruction by supporting students individually and/or in small groups, facilitating discussions, reviewing class projects, reinforcing curriculum and content learning objectives, discussing test preparation strategies and providing homework assistance.
  • Identifies and supports the diverse needs of individual learners; refer students with non-tutorial needs to other campus resources, as appropriate.
  • Reviews course-specific instructional materials as provided by students and instructors.


Additional Duties

  • Provide routine clerical support related to student tutoring programs and objectives.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.)

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Two (2) semesters or three (3) quarters of related college-level coursework with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Bilingual language skills in Spanish/English
  • Ability to tutor all subject areas needed to pass the GED exam. Subject areas include language arts, math, social studies, and science.

Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar environment.

Hazards: Potential interaction with anxious and/or distressed individuals.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other general office and instructional equipment and technologies; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office and instructional technologies and equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.


Salary:
Salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.

Part-time Tutors are paid based on accumulated work hours according to the salary schedule below; all new employees will start at level 1.

    Sick Leave
    New hires will receive eight (8) hours of sick leave upon hire. An ILC instructor will receive one hour per term of paid sick leave per ILC, which includes Special Loading. An hourly instructor or tutor will receive one hour of paid sick leave per 11 hours of employment. Unused sick leave will accumulate up to a maximum of 80 hours and be available for use in subsequent academic terms.

    Tuition Waiver Plan
    Each employee will be eligible for a full tuition waiver, which is equivalent to 24 credits, for each term in which the employee is working for the College. Such waiver may be used for tuition for credit courses or the fee in lieu of tuition for noncredit courses (commonly called Fee B). Such tuition waivers are not cumulative. However, an employee may use a tuition waiver in the term immediately following the term in which the waiver was earned. Employees and their spouses/domestic partners will pay only course-specific fees. Tuition waiver(s) may be assigned by the employee to his/her immediate family (to one or amongst the family) to be used in the term in which the waiver is earned by the employee or the term immediately following the term in which the waiver was earned.
