Description

Are you energetic, mechanically inclined and enjoy hands-on work? As a maintenance technician at the Mount Prospect Public Library, you will be able to showcase your knowledge of the various trades. Our building services team is essential for providing staff and our patrons with a clean and well-maintained public space. While no evening is the same, during your shift you may take care of event or meeting room setups, replace lightbulbs or disperse deliveries.  

 

SCHEDULE: 16 hours per week 

  • Monday 4pm to 10pm
  • Tuesday 4pm to 10pm
  • Friday 4pm to 8pm

 

SALARY: $21 per hour

 

BENEFITS: Our part-time staff are eligible for paid time off, paid holidays, including a “birthday” holiday, as well as dental insurance and pet insurance.

 

PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician performs duties relating to the upkeep of the library facilities, equipment, and property. This position will also perform routine preventative HVAC maintenance work. Other duties include meeting room setup, emptying book bins, and unloading library material donations. Overall, this position requires the ability to perform medium to heavy work while maintaining the safety and appearance of the facilities and grounds.

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position comprises of the following essential duties:

  • Facility Maintenance (approx. 30%)
  • Equipment Maintenance (approx. 30%)
  • Cleaning & Sanitation (approx. 20%)
  • Meeting Room Preparation (approx. 20%)

Other non-essential job duties may include facility opening and/or closing responsibilities.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Facility Maintenance

  1. Assists in the maintenance of plumbing fixtures (inspection, repair or replacement of pumps and valves.
  2. Assists in the repair and maintenance of lockable hardware such as doors, automatic electric doors, windows, lockers, etc.
  3. Assists in the repair and maintenance to commercial HVAC systems and equipment.
  4. Maintains landscaping, retention walls, planters, irrigation system and grounds of the building including weeding and planting.
  5. Removes snow and ice to provide safe access for the public and staff.
  6. Maintains light fixtures and performs minor electric repairs including electrical wiring, switches, outlets, light ballasts, and other electrical fixtures.
  7. Monitors electrical and HVAC systems.
  8. Performs janitorial duties including vacuuming, carpet cleaning, hard floor care, cleaning restrooms, and general housekeeping tasks as assigned.
     

Equipment Maintenance

  1. Diagnoses problems and performs necessary repairs on malfunctioning equipment and electrical fixtures when assigned.
  2. Maintains grounds care equipment.
  3. Performs occasional carpentry work including sawing, routing, and jointing of wood.
  4. Performs maintenance related duties including assembling, moving, and adjusts shelving.
  5. Performs maintenance related duties including shifting furniture and/or equipment.
  6. Performs maintenance related duties including routine painting, plastering and wall repair.
  7. Performs maintenance related duties assembling and/or repairing general furniture and equipment.
     

Cleaning & Sanitation

  1. Cleans and maintains tile floors using appropriate equipment and chemicals.
  2. Cleans and sanitizes all restroom facilities using appropriate cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  3. Cleans windows and glass surfaces to maintain a streak-free and polished appearance as assigned.
  4. Vacuums carpeting using appropriate equipment.
  5. Ensures all floor surfaces are free of debris, stains and hazards.
  6. Performs spot-cleaning for any stains or damage requiring additional treatment, as needed.

 

Meeting Room Preparation

  1. Uses related scheduling software to track events and ensure proper set up for reservations.
  2. Set up and arrange meeting rooms according to event or meeting requirements, including positioning tables, chairs and other related items.
     

Other

  1. Collects and removes trash from various locations on the premises, including offices, workstations, common areas, and outdoor spaces.
  2. Collects recyclable materials and ensures the disposal in accordance with established procedures.
  3. Maintains and cleans trash bins, recycling containers and other equipment used in the removal process.
  4. May remove and dispose of other library material, as needed or directed.
  5. Activates/deactivates building security system when needed.
  6. Maintains accurate service and repair records.
  7. Operates a variety of hand and power equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  8. Picks-up and delivers library materials and runs errands as necessary.
  9. Prepares daily opening and closing of the library as needed.
  10. Attends appropriate meetings, workshops and seminars.
  11. Serves on committees as assigned.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma (or equivalent work experience) required.  Demonstrated maintenance work experience required. Certification and training in related fields a plus. Position-related and office-related technology skills required and experience with public buildings and/or library desirable.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and a favorable motor vehicle report required.
