What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adjunct Instructor - General Biology position at Mountain Empire Community Coll?
Mountain Empire Community College invites applications for adjunct instructors in the field of general biology. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach daytime lab sections on MECC’s campus in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Adjunct lab instructors will teach multiple lab sections and will work closely with MECC’s full-time biology instructor to match lab exercises with core curriculum requirements. Additional opportunities may be available to teach sections of the biology lecture both online and in person.
Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom or online environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Has a thorough understanding of diversity in student populations and the ability to connect with, include, and consider all student populations in curriculum development and teaching.
- Understands and has a belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders important to the college.
- Knowledge of and ability to integrate technology in the classroom and via distance delivery modes.
- Proficient in oral and written communication.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology is required for adjunct lab instructors.
- A Master’s degree in Biology or a Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Biology is required to teach biology lectures.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including day and evening hours.
- Ability to primarily deliver coursework in person in classroom but able to transfer to an online environment utilizing multiple teaching strategies.
Wide range of coursework through the Biology subject area.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into instruction.
