Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
The Workforce Apprenticeship Coordinator is responsible for developing, planning, and implementing workforce apprenticeship programs, events, and initiatives that create workforce courses and recruit apprenticeship and internship opportunities for students. This role involves collaboration with campus departments, community organizations, and business partners to address the diverse needs of students, staff, and faculty as well as educational programs for the communities within our service region.
This is a temporary position funded by a grant, set to end on June 30, 2025. If the grant is renewed, there is potential for the position to be extended for an additional year. As a full-time role, it includes a comprehensive benefits package available to all full-time employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

- Understanding of community engagement strategies, including knowledge of diverse community groups and how to connect with them effectively.
Minimum required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in workforce development, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience demonstrating mastery in one or more of these areas.
- Communicates clearly and persuasively both in writing as demonstrated in the application package and verbally.
- Experience in organizing and coordinating community events, classes, or workshops, including setting schedules, securing venues, and managing logistics.
- Effective network experience, showing the ability to establish trust, and maintain long-term relationships with businesses.
- Strong organizational and project management skills as demonstrated in previous training or experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.
Knowledge of student and adult learner workforce development needs.
Experience in a higher education or non-profit setting.
Experience in developing apprenticeship programs.
