Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
The Community and Campus Health Events Coordinator is responsible for developing, planning, and implementing health and wellness programs, events, and initiatives that create a health campus environment and community. This role involves collaboration with campus departments, community organizations, and health providers to address the diverse needs of students, staff, and faculty as well as educational programs for the communities within our service region.
This is a temporary position funded by a grant, set to end on June 30, 2025. If the grant is renewed, there is potential for the position to be extended for an additional year. As a full-time role, it includes a comprehensive benefits package available to all full-time employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Fundamental concepts of public health, community health, and event management.
- Understanding of health promotion strategies, community engagement practices, and project management methodologies.
- Basic understanding of regulations and best practices in health and wellness events.
- Ability to apply knowledge of health programs or event management in practical settings.
- Analytical skills to evaluate and interpret data related to public health or event coordination.
- Ability to develop clear project goals and break them into manageable tasks.
- Effective prioritization of tasks to meet deadlines and objectives.
- Multitasking ability to juggle competing demands on time and resources.
- Cultural competence and understanding of diverse community needs and backgrounds.

Minimum required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in public health, community health, event management or a related field, or equivalent experience demonstrating mastery in one or more of these areas.
- Experience in planning and coordinating events or programs, especially in community health.
- Strong organizational and project management skills as demonstrated in previous training or experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.
- Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by the cover letter, resume, and application package.
- Demonstrated excellent oral communication skills.
Experience in a higher education or non-profit setting.
Familiarity with health-related topics, such as mental health, nutrition, or preventive care.
