Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Ability to learn the range of services the practice provides, as well as the species it treats
- Familiarity with breeds and coat colors
- Ability to follow OSHA standards and find the Material Safety Data sheets quickly
- Knowledge and ability to use standard medical and business abbreviations
- Ability to learn proper medical terminology when speaking and writing
- Ability to learn infectious diseases, including prevention and steps to reduce or avoid transmission
- Ability to learn the most common zoonotic diseases
- Maintain a professional appearance in work appropriate clothing
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor while working under potentially stressful situations
- Respect for clients, co-workers, and animals (alive or deceased)
- Ability to stand for an entire shift if needed and ability to lift pets or objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance
- Assist the doctor and other employees as needed, including practicing proper restraint techniques
- Keep up with new developments in the field of Veterinary services
- Willingness to teach, and be taught
- Proper maintenance of entrances and exits to make sure pets are secure and safe
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding clients and patients
- Preparedness for any pet or facility emergency, such as fights between animals, choking or strangulation, or fire and weather emergencies
- Maintain proper and accurate client and patient records
- Keep kennel clean and in order, including cleaning up messes left by pets
- Ability to continuously monitor pets for any signs of distress, illness, or injury
- Responsible for “housekeeping” duties, including but not limited to, laundry, dishes, floors, walls, door, windows, etc.
Experience, Education, and Training
- High school education required
- Previous kennel experience desired but not required
