Job Summary
As the Materials Manager, you are responsible for managing and optimizing shipping/receiving, packaging, and inventory control systems. The ideal candidate is a strategic, highly organized and detail-oriented professional with experience managing warehouse operations and inventory control. The Materials Manager will have a proven track record in continuous improvement and process optimization, along with excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
General:
- Collaborate with project management, procurement, scheduling, manufacturing, and other stakeholders to align efforts with business objectives and customer expectations.
- Leverage Lean, continuous improvement techniques and current/new technology to ensure that logistics operations are efficient and cost-effective.
- Lead cross-functional efforts to improve operational processes and procedures in support of the organization’s goals, exceptional customer service and operational excellence.
- Manage, coach, and develop staff to ensure continuity and prepare for growth while also providing opportunities for career growth.
- Develop, maintain and regularly report on Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that are aligned with the organization’s goals.
- Ensure team discipline, accuracy and timeliness to update ERP and other systems including work orders, time entry, and material transactions.
- Build and promote a strong Safety and Quality culture. Ensure compliance with all state and local health, safety, and work requirements. Maintain a safe working environment and conduct production activities in a safe manner.
Shipping/Receiving & Warehouse Management:
- Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments of raw materials, finished goods, and other supplies as needed.
- Oversee finished goods packaging and storage. Select packaging designs, materials and methods to protect goods during transit and storage.
- Oversees receipts and inspection of inbound materials. Communicates with Finance and Supply Chain as needed.
- Select carriers and negotiate contracts/rates.
- Coordinate carriers, freight forwarders, and third-party logistics providers to ensure timely, accurate, and cost-effective delivery.
- Prepare, manage and maintain accurate documentation and records (e.g. BOL, invoices, packing lists, etc.)
- Coordinate material movements and deliver materials to manufacturing to facilitate efficient and cost-effective operations.
- Ensures all incoming raw materials are received, put away and stored appropriately.
Inventory Management:
- Develop, improve and manage the inventory management system and cycle count process to ensure accuracy of inventory and records.
- Drive and perform inventory discrepancy investigations/corrections to ensure accurate inventory and find, document, and eliminate root causes (i.e. BOM or errors, transactional discipline, etc.).
- Implement best practices and automation tools to optimize inventory workflows and reduce manual effort.
Qualifications/Experience
- 5 years of industry-related experience, including a minimum of four years in shipping/receiving, warehouse and inventory management.
- Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of developing and motivating employees.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate cross functionally and externally with clients and suppliers.
- Self-directed, highly organized, detail oriented and thrives in a fast past paced environment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills with a proven track record with continual process improvement and optimizing performance.
- Practiced Lean Logistics methodology and systems (Kan ban, Kaizen, Flow etc.). Lean 6-Sigma Certification is a differentiator.
- Knowledge of shipping regulations, imports/exports and DOT requirements
- Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly MS Excel.
- Experience with ERP; Global Shop experience a differentiator
