The Mississippi Office of the Attorney General's is seeking Attorneys to work within multiple divisions within the agency.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Duties :
- Supervises outside counsel who represent the state, in complex consumer protection and securities matters, including review of outside counsel’s work product before filing and attendance of hearings, depositions, and other events when necessary.
- Research, review and preparation of pleadings.
- Prepare recommendations to the Attorney General.
- Respond to consumer inquiries regarding outside counsel cases and settlements.
- Guide litigation strategy and settlement discussions with input from supervisor.
This is professional legal work with the responsibility of serving as a special staff lawyer for the State Attorney General. The incumbent serves as special counsel to the Attorney General and devotes their entire time and attention to the duties pertaining to the Office of Attorney General as required by the general laws. The incumbent renders professional legal services on matters and proceedings relating to the assigned division and area of law and performs administrative duties as necessary for the accomplishment of the Attorney General's office functions. The incumbent may perform any duties as assigned by the Attorney General. Work is performed under the limited supervision of a senior staff lawyer.

Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following :
Reviews legal documents, pleadings, briefs, letters, legal decisions, and other memoranda affecting the state and / or Attorney General's Office for use in case preparation or in writing official opinions.
Conducts legal research for use in preparing legal documents.
Analyzes and interprets state, federal, and agency laws and regulations to provide legal advice or counsel for state agencies.
Reviews and makes recommendations on agreements, contracts, and other actions by an agency.
Conducts routine negotiations with clients, witnesses, or other interested parties in gathering information.
Counsels' clients and investigates and reviews claims to determine merits of proceeding with the case or complaint.
Files legal actions with appropriate court in accordance with prescribed legal procedures.
Conducts litigation before local, state, and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies involving all types of discovery, depositions, interrogatories, and production of documents.
Confers with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issues to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings.
Plans, organizes, and directs work activities of the division as assigned by the Attorney General.
Writes legal briefs, motions, and other pleadings to support arguments to facilitate the mediation / litigation process.
Advises agency management on potential legal issues affecting the agency.
Represents the agency in legal proceedings which may occur in various settings and jurisdictions.
Represents the Attorney General's Office in state or federal district and appellate courts.
Minimum Qualifications :

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
Certification, Licensure, and / or Registration :
Membership in the Mississippi State Bar Association.
Required Documentation :
Applicant must attach evidence of membership in the Mississippi State Bar Association.
