What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Nursing position at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center?
The Director of Nursing will be accountable for operational management and clinical leadership in designated departments. Develops collaborative relationships with other nurse leaders to model behaviors that encourage interaction and resource management between patient care areas. Uses the principles of shared governance and just culture and supports a culture of innovation. Assures effective transitions for patients between departments. Fosters cooperative relationships with departments throughout the organization. Maintains clinical skills in order to provide direct patient care as needed in the departments.
Clinical Practice • Promotes clinical practice based on best evidence. Serves as a resource for specialty based information and research • Promotes a clinical environment in which staff participates in ongoing education as well as the use of a wide range of resources available to enhance practice. • Provides clinical consultation and assistance upon request to other patient care areas at MAHHC. • Works effectively with physician colleagues in the department to ensure quality in the provision of patient care. • Leads the development and maintenance of an effective multi-disciplinary approach to the resolution of clinical challenges. • Establishes a compassionate and caring environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients and their significant others.
Operational Management • Schedules staff appropriately on a daily basis in accordance with department needs. Conducts ongoing reassessment of the staffing requirements based on volume. Communicates and collaborates with CNO to make adjustments as required. • Works collaboratively with HR to recruit and hire staff into the department. • Conducts timely and meaningful performance reviews with all staff . • Coaches and counsels staff as needed to assure optimal performance. • Collaborates with CNO to develop departmental operating and capital budgets. Monitors expenses and analyzes variances. Develops new policies when appropriate.
Personal and Staff Development • Maintains professional competence through participation in educational programs and workshops • Encourages staff development. Works collaboratively with others to engage the staff to participate in organizational priorities. • Ensures that all staff complete orientation, annual competencies, and mandatory requirements in a timely manner. • Ensures hospital and departmental policies and procedures are followed in a manner consistent with MAHHC expectations. • Empowers staff to make decisions and feel a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
