Job Summary

Facilitates the advising for special student populations within High School Services programs, provides interactive supports with school district collaborators supporting student success, and assists with coordination of the Early College program and the Underage Enrollment process. Guides students in the development of a comprehensive education plan that meets high school graduation requirements and student college goals and increases retention.  Promotes Mt. Hood High School programs to community stakeholders and engages students and school district staff.   Assists with strengthening partnerships with school districts and systematically improving program relations. Acts as a liaison to high schools and the community to coordinate presentations and campus visits. 

Essential Duties

  1. Advises students from pre-enrollment to graduation and monitors and assists students in the transition to post-secondary education and/or training. Attends counseling and career department meetings, and works with partners to support student placement and enrollment, orientation, retention, and persistence. 
  2. Coaches students and assists them in navigating college systems and developing student self-advocacy skills.  Assists students with the development of decision-making skills, awareness of educational resources, and reinforcement of self-direction in educational planning. Assists students in addressing barriers to persistence and provides wrap-around and on-going support to students.
  3. Assists students in developing meaningful education plans compatible with career and life goals. Evaluates transcripts and other documents, and advises students selection of appropriate courses, interpretation of institutional requirements, and assessment of progress toward high school diploma requirements.
  4. Works to ensure that students maintain satisfactory academic progress and provides supplementary assistance to those who need additional support. Ensures that students are aware of important College-related deadlines and milestones and provides contacts for additional resources as needed.
  5. Coordinates and attends a variety of information sessions, presentations, and events in participating high schools and the community. 
  6. Facilitates outreach and communication with students and school district partners to foster an understanding of services and benefits. 
  7. Facilitates and conducts new student orientations, student success seminars, and program related workshops. 
  8. Creates brochures, transition materials, student guides, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation on behalf of the program.
  9. Maintains confidential case files for each enrolled student with accurate case notes and documentation. Gathers statistical and summary information for reports

Additional Duties

  1. Assists other advisors in other programs as needed.
  2. Expands student populations served as able.
  3. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary and/or high school academic advising experience
  • Experience with public speaking and/or facilitating workshops or other enrichment activities
  • Intermediate skills utilizing Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook 

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education or related field
  • Experience advising high school students
  • Experience in the design, organization, and execution of workshops and/or other educational and cultural enrichment activities 
  • Experience working with at-risk populations
  • Experience working at a community college
  • Experience teaching college guidance courses
  • Bilingual in Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, or other language that meets community needs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of high school graduation and college curriculum requirements 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively as part of a team   
  • Knowledge of the Family Education and Privacy Rights Act (FERPA)
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Skills in effective advising and counseling techniques
  • Skills in marketing and recruitment
  • Ability to plan and implement educational and informational programs in a diverse cultural environment and to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. Cultural responsiveness, emotional intelligence, and professional maturity.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a computer terminal. Visual eye strain and repetitive hand/wrist motion for data entry and keyboarding functions. Occasional local travel and evening hours required. 

This position is primarily on site but may be eligible for remote work on an intermittent basis. Any remote work requires prior approval and must comply
with MHCC Remote Work policies and administrative regulations. Remote work must
be within the states of Oregon or Washington.

Salary : $53,124 - $73,538
