JOB SUMMARY

Provides high quality instruction to students enrolled in classes that will provide learning experiences necessary for each student to meet course and program outcomes.  Works with the dean and colleagues to improve student learning experiences. Performs other instructional responsibilities as assigned and determined by the dean.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Helps advance the role and goals of a comprehensive community college. 
  2. Provides instruction for nursing theory and clinical and nursing skills across the lifespan addressing prevention and chronic and acute health issues.
  3. Ensures and confirms that students are appropriately prepared for clinical experiences and have demonstrated competency, in compliance with the curriculum, in the expected care and treatments to be performed.
  4. Prepares clear learning outcomes for each course and informs students of learning outcomes in a course syllabus.
  5. Supervises nursing students in the clinical setting, long term care, acute care and/or community health care activities as assigned.
  6. Assesses and evaluates student performance in theory courses, nursing skills lab activities, and/or clinical setting.
  7. Works collaboratively with nursing faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate simulated learning experiences.
  8. Creates a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  9. Collaborates with faculty and staff from other departments and divisions to promote communication, coordinate programs, and support student success. 
  10. Supports student recruitment, placement, retention, and advising. 
  11. Posts and keeps office hours to be available to students for assistance outside the classroom.
  12. Teaches at least one evening section per year as needed.
  13. Keeps professionally current in nursing and education by participating in professional development and other activities.  Maintains current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation. 
  14. Maintains active liaisons with high schools, universities, businesses and industry, or external agencies and assists the dean with program advisory committees as appropriate. 
  15. Completes instructional duties, reports, and paperwork assigned by the dean in a timely manner. 
  16. Attends and participates in faculty and curriculum meetings and student orientation to the clinical/lab courses as deemed appropriate by the department.
  17. Incorporates, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning, laboratory and office environments. 
  18. Creates and maintains a positive learning environment that focuses on safety, respect of clients and colleagues, and effective communication.
  19. Models professional nursing practices and behaviors for students.
  20. Participates in college service and activities outside direct instruction, such as registration, curriculum development, strategic planning, educational assessment, and completion ceremonies. 
  21. Attends division, department, and committee meetings and in-service programs.
  22. Maintains and emphasizes safe working conditions and practices.
  23. Complies with all Board policies and administrative regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing or a related discipline, or currently enrolled in and making progress towards a Master’s degree in Nursing 
  • Three (3) years of recent experience as a registered nurse
  • A current unencumbered registered nurse license in the State of Oregon OR a current unencumbered RN license in another state with the ability to be licensed in Oregon by the first day of summer term
  • Able to lift 35 pounds without assistance and work without restrictions in the role of an acute care nurse for a 10- to 12-hour shift
  • Current driver’s license, insurance, and the ability to be insured by the College’s insurance carrier. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.
  • Must have current Health Care Provider CPR certification at the time of hire.
  • Must have documentation of immunizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in nursing education with documented course work in education, curriculum development, and/or clinical supervision.
  • Recent long term care experience and/or an interest in long term clinical care.
  • Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment techniques, including the use of technology, that enhance student success.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a drug screen upon hire.
  • Maintain current immunizations as required by clinical partners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing 
  • Ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse student populations
  • Ability to work independently in handling multiple tasks, priorities, and changing deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Knowledge of computer programs including word processing, database applications, email, video conferencing software (ie. Zoom), and learning management systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed in a classroom, nursing skills lab, and at off-campus clinical health care facilities. Some work may be performed in the remote environment. Frequent and prolonged standing and walking during clinical and in patient care settings. Must be able to lift 35 pounds without assistance. Must be able to work flexible hours with the possibility of some evenings or weekends.  

This is an on-site position. Any remote work requires prior approval and must comply with MHCC Remote Work policies and administrative regulations. Remote work must be within the states of Oregon or Washington.
