Provides coordination for a broad range of activities and programs that promote diversity, inclusion, and equity through student success and goal attainment. Provides guidance and support to multicultural student organizations as they develop and host programs to educate the college community on issues of race, gender, religion/spirituality, and class. Develops and implements diversity and multicultural programs and activities that build awareness and foster understanding and acceptance among members of the campus community especially during commemorative months throughout the year. Fosters social justice and works to improve campus climate and enhance the involvement and academic/personal success of students of color and other historically marginalized communities through partnerships. Develops assessment plans for learning outcomes and goals to enhance the cultural competency of all students.
Essential Duties
- Assists with the coordination of the daily operations of the Multicultural and Diversity Resource Center (MDRC). Assists with the development and implementation of programs, initiatives, and events that foster increased cultural competency and awareness for students and staff. Develops assessment plans for learning outcomes and goals to enhance the cultural competency of all students.
- Provides support to and collaborates with other units in offering academic, social, and cultural events that support the retention of historically underrepresented students. Provides resources, connections, and general resources.
- Coordinates Multicultural programming. Supports students in developing skills, cultural competences, and addressing the specific needs of individuals, cohorts, clubs, and other groups as they arise. Develops and implements leadership development program for students of color and develops workshops and seminars for program participants. Provides general support and referrals to additional resources as needed.
- Provides supervision of student employees and student leaders, including recruitment, scheduling, training, evaluation, and mentoring students.
- Serves on Diversity Access Committee and other committees that support students who are historically underrepresented. Works with department staff and stakeholder at the college to increase a sense of belonging for historically marginalized populations of students including, but not limited to, students of color, students who identify as LGBTQ , students who are refugees, undocumented or DACAmented students, first-generation college students, etc.
- Provides general advising to student organizations and provides special consideration to cultural and diversity clubs and those without advisors who need additional supports. Acts as the assigned advisor to the Council on Multicultural and Diversity Affairs. Assists with the ongoing development of existing clubs and organizations and the formation of new ones.
- Plans, implements and carries out cultural and identity-based events including special events such as Native America Heritage Month Celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, etc. to bring foster increased cultural awareness to the college community.
- Assist with cultivating one-on-one support and advocacy for student leadership, advising for cultural and diversity clubs, student groups, multicultural programming, and college-readiness initiatives.
- Provides support and advances internal department goals and ongoing program assessments. Assists with the review and evaluation of the program to ensure the department and the college meet its strategic goals
- Assists to actively identify, create, and disseminate resource information in-person, online, and via social media outlets to MHCC students, focusing on creating an inclusive environment for students on campus.
- Collaborates with Student Recruitment staff and SOAR (Student Outreach and Recruitment) leaders to develop and deliver specific outreach programming and recruitment services to students of culturally diverse backgrounds that are consistent with the College's strategic enrollment management goals to reflect, where possible, the demographics of the College's service area.
- Creates and fosters partnerships with local community-based organizations and colleges to provide resources and opportunities and connections for students.
Additional Duties
- Oversees development and implementation of special diversity-related events (e.g., conferences hosted at MHCC) for the College and community.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.)
- Bachelor's degree in gender studies, intercultural communication, organizational development, public administration, or related field
- Two (2) years of experience in planning, designing, and/or implementing diversity-focused programs in an education and/or social service setting, including program assessment.
- Understanding of diversity/intercultural effectiveness, and how those concepts can be applied to a large public institution of higher learning
- Experience facilitating, mediating and problem solving in a group environment with a diverse student population.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered on a year for year basis
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in gender studies, intercultural communication, organizational development, public administration, or related field
- Bilingual oral and written skills with fluency in English and other language that meets community needs
- Current driver's license, insurance and access to reliable automobile during work hours for transportation to off-campus sites. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.

- Skill in delivering training presentations
- Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form
- Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and diplomacy, and work with students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to diffuse an emotional or tense situation and offer viable solutions
- Ability to work as a part of a team
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including computers and software packages
- Ability to be flexible, prioritize multiple projects, be self-directed and work independently
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a student services environment with a high level of student contact. The work environment at times may be emotional and stressful when resolving interpersonal conflict and providing support.
This position is primarily on site but may be eligible for remote work on an intermittent basis. Anyremote work requires prior approval and must comply with MHCC Remote Work
policies and administrative regulations. Remote work must be within the states
of Oregon or Washington.
Salary: Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement.
