Incorporated in 1955 and encompassing more than 454 acres, the Mt. Prospect Park District provides outstanding recreational programs, events, parks, facilities and services. With seven primary facilities and 27 neighborhood parks, the Park District is an integral part of a thriving multi-generational community. District open space includes two outdoor pools, biking and walking paths, a dog park and sizable space for outdoor athletic programming. The District covers over 11 square miles and serves a region of over a quarter million residents in Mount Prospect and surrounding communities.

We are searching for part-time 2025 Summer Seasonal Swim Lesson Instructors. We are willing to train energetic and reliable people with an interest in Aquatics! The pay rate for non-certified Swim Lesson Instructors teaching swim lessons is $16.00 per hour. The non-certified rate when training for the non-certified Swim Lesson Instructor position is $15.00 per hour. During the outdoor pool season, additional hours may be available working as a Cashier or Raft Attendant for employees who are 16 years old. The pay rate when working as a Cashier or Raft Attendant is $15.00 per hour. District employees also receive facility privileges and discounts. Candidates must be at least 16 years old, or 15 years old with a worker’s permit, to work as a Swim Lesson Instructor. Employees must be at least 16 years old to work as a Cashier or Raft Attendant (outdoors in the summer months). Candidates must also be able to successfully pass a criminal background check. Swim Lesson Instructors may have hours prior to summer, for training and to prepare for the summer season. Typically the pre-season hours would occur on a Sunday. During the summer months, swim lessons will begin the week of June 9, 2025, and take place on Monday / Tuesday / Thursday mornings between 9 : 45am - 12 : 15pm and / or Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday evenings between 4 : 30pm - 7 : 30pm.

Requirements : ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

Provide appropriate supervision and ensure the safety of patrons and staff in the aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies when needed.

Teach swim classes in accordance with the District’s instructional swimming program.

Assist in developing and implementing lesson plans appropriate to program level and participant’s abilities. Ensure that class environment, facilities, materials and equipment are organized to enhance individual / group performance and minimize distractions during the lesson period.

Correctly explain and demonstrate each water skill for students. Provide students with proper feedback and correction on their performance and offer suggestions for improvement when needed. Evaluate students’ progress and report on student’s progress to parents.

Maintain accurate records including attendance and skill sheets.

Foster a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment for all participants.

Prevent accidents by enforcing pool rules, and maintaining discipline within the swim lesson class.

Assist in the opening and / or closing procedures of the facility.

Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Perform basic maintenance and light housekeeping in the pool area and locker rooms to ensure a safe and clean environment.

Report any irregular discipline, safety or maintenance problems to the Pool Manager.

Recognize and respond to emergencies and assist with emergency procedures. Assist with emergency procedures. Provide assistance to Lifeguards and Pool Management administering first aid techniques and CPR procedures as needed.

Attend required training and meetings. Participate in rescue drills, first aid reviews, instructional clinics and other skill development activities.

Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, employee handbook, and work safety rules. Prevent accidents by maintaining discipline and enforcing agency, departmental and state health rules, policies and procedures.

SECONDARY DUTIES :

Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Additional functions as assigned which may be considered essential.

All other duties as assigned by the on-duty Pool Manager, Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Manager, Superintendent of Recreation, Director of Recreation, and / or the Executive Director. However, in an emergency, perform all other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Must be a current high school student, high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. Must be at least 16 years old, or 15 years old with a worker’s permit, to work as a Swim Lesson Instructor. Must be at least 16 years old to work as a Cashier or Raft Attendant (outdoors in the summer months).

CPR (Infant, Child and Adult), AED and First Aid Certification is a plus.

Must be able to communicate effectively with others for safety purposes and to allow for coordination of work. Must be able to effectively communicate with District patrons and coworkers.

Must be able to recognize unsafe conditions and respond accordingly. Must be able to quickly respond to emergency situations while understanding procedures and policies.

Must be able to count and correctly complete monetary transactions.

Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Must be able to perform tasks that require walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting and reaching, and swimming. Must be able to enter the pool at any given time. Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time as well as be able to walk around the pool facilities. Will be exposed to indoor and outdoor conditions including pool water, high humidity, sun, rain, and warm and cold temperatures.

Due to the needs of the Park District, evening and weekend hours may be required. Your work schedule may vary and your workweek may exceed regular hours at times, but will be less than 1,000 hours per year. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function of the Swim Lesson Instructor position.
