JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and complex administrative, technical and professional work in current planning and other programs of the Tribe related to the implementation of land use and related plans and policies. Work includes, but is not limited to, undertaking NEPA and development reviews; processing zoning and subdivision applications and permits; developing land use plans, zoning regulations, and environmental regulations; researching and interpreting data; and preparing studies and reports. Work requires contacts with a wide variety of clients.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION
Required:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in land-use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture or a closely related field.
- Four (4) years related planning experience that includes at least two (2) years project leader or supervisory experience.
Preferred: Transportation planning experience
Special Requirements: A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at time of the appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION
- Applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures and current literature, trends and developments;
- Comprehensive plans including their formation, process of adoption, and enforcement;
- Planning principles and techniques and the socio‑economic implications of planning;
- Statistical applications used in regional planning modeling;
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, codes and regulatory requirements.
- Experience in conducting public outreach, and working with and presenting to boards, elected officials, community groups, other departments, and other agencies.
- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural workforce and serve a diverse customer base.
- Ability to think conceptually, see the big picture, and pay attention to detail.
- Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules, and procedures.
- Possesses a strong sense of teamwork and proactively contributes to the team.
- Demonstrates considerable initiative in performing job functions and flexibility to change priorities when necessary.

- Conducting research, analyzing data and compiling comprehensive reports, with recommendations; and making presentations that are well-written, accurate, clear, and understandable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments and construction sites. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office, and moderate in the field.
