POSITION TITLE: Director of Athletics and Activities 

 

LOCATION: District wide  

 

AVAILABLE: July 1, 2025 

 

COMPENSATION:  Commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in sports administration or related field.  Master’s degree from an accredited institution 
  2. Pennsylvania Teacher Certification preferred. 
  3. Pennsylvania Secondary School Principal Certification preferred. 
  4. Minimum of five (5) years secondary (middle or high school) teaching experience, preferably at the applicable level 
  5. Knowledge of P.I.A.A. Rules 
  6. Prior experience in athletics, athletic administration, and student activities, and extensive knowledge of and experience with athletic programs and student activities 
  7. Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation 
  8. Any additional or alternative qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board of School Directors

SUPERVISES AND EVALUATES: Assists the building principal in supervising and evaluating all athletic staff and the secretary of athletics. 

 

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:  

The Director of Athletics and Activities is responsible for developing, coordinating, facilitating, and overseeing a comprehensive activities and extracurricular program that supports the school district’s objective of promoting excellence through student involvement. This position is accountable for planning, implementing, and supervising extracurricular programs for students in grades 6 through 12 while ensuring that interscholastic and extracurricular activities serve the best interests of students, the school, and the community. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  1. The Director of Student Activities and Athletics is responsible for overseeing all High School student activities and athletics (grades 9-12), and all Middle School athletics (grades 6-8). 
  2. Serve as a community liaison by cultivating and maintaining strategic partnerships between the district and local sports organizations, recreational leagues, and feeder programs. 
  3. Facilitate collaborative initiatives that enhance student-athlete development and ensure the long-term sustainability of athletic programs. 
  4. Ensures compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, including but not limited to Title IX, PIAA, NFHS, and local school board policies and administrative regulations related to the administration of student activities and athletics. 
  5. Provides necessary professional development for coaches, trainers, and volunteers regarding all appropriate aspects of athletic administration including Title IX, community service, sportsmanship, equity, and responsibility. 
  6. Represent the high school at functions outside of the school day - extracurricular activities. 
  7. Assist teachers with strategies designed to meet student athletes as individual learners. 
  8. Design, facilitate, and/or participate in professional development sessions as they relate to coaches and the athletic department staff.  
  9. Communicate regularly and effectively with house teams – counselors, attendance clerks, social worker, administrative assistants – regarding student athletes.  
  10. Communicate regularly and effectively with students and families – digitally, conversationally, and face-to-face. 
  11. Work in conjunction with administrative team to determine consequences for behaviors specific to the behavior, student, and learning profile of the student in question, along with Suburban One League Code of Conduct. 
  12. Represent the District and High School Principal, as needed, at Suburban One, District 1 and P.I.A.A. meetings.  
  13. Communicate to the coaching staff all Suburban One, District 1 and P.I.A.A. information, rules, directives, etc., in a timely fashion. This includes ensuring representation at all leagues and P.I.A.A. mandatory pre-season meetings as well as issuing the most up-to-date P.I.A.A. rulebook for each sport.  
  14. Implement and monitor the usage of the Suburban One League Code of Conduct.  
  15. Monitor the eligibility, attendance and discipline of all student-athletes based on P.I.A.A. and District policies.  
  16. Participate, along with administration, in interviewing, hiring, evaluating and releasing all coaches as needed.  
  17. Responsible for implementing and tracking of mandated trainings for new and returning coaches.  
  18. Develop the annual interscholastic schedule, including scrimmages, league games, tournaments and non-league games.  
  19. Coordinate transportation for the high school athletic teams, including varsity, junior varsity, freshmen teams.  
  20. Assume complete game management responsibility for all home contests, including the responsibility for gate receipts.  
  21. Work with the field manager to keep the athletic fields in good condition and in determining when fields are playable and when contests need to be rescheduled. 
  22. Schedule and authorize the payment of officials for all home contests in the district – both high school and middle school.  
  23. Schedule Athletic Department helpers, police, emergency personnel and trainers for home athletic contests as needed.  
  24. Responsible for purchasing new and replacement equipment and uniforms – both annually and as needed – in conjunction with the equipment manager. Ensure accurate inventory of equipment and uniforms with the assistance of the equipment manager.  
  25. Work with the equipment manager to issue and collect all Athletic Department equipment. Schedule an end of season meeting to collect all equipment. Create an obligation schedule to be provided to administration for athletes who fail to turn in equipment.  
  26. Work with the coaches to ensure complete compliance with the district’s activities policies, including any activity fee payments.  
  27. Responsible for annual evaluation of head coaches and EDR recommendations submitted to HR for upcoming school year.  
  28. Develop, present and implement the annual Athletic Department budget.  
  29. Serve as the District’s liaison for booster clubs and attend meetings of such clubs when necessary.  
  30. Coordinate and issue Athletic Department awards, letters, trophies, etc.  
  31. Attend team banquets when schedule permits.  
  32. Attend School Board meetings and Activity Committee meetings when necessary.  
  33. Serve as the chairman of individual league sports and manage playoff contests and tournaments when requested by the Suburban One League, District 1 and the P.I.A.A.  
  34. Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal and/or the Superintendent of Schools.  

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess current Act 34, Act 151 and Act 114 FBI clearances. Act 168 Employment History Review/Questionnaire required.
