Migrant Education Summer School: MESD provides a supplemental summer extension for Kindergarten through 8th grade students eligible for Migrant Education Program services during the summer months, with a focus on reading, math and high school graduation.

 

We are seeking highly qualified, bilingual/bicultural elementary teachers with ESOL endorsements to teach 1st-6th grade migrant students at a site in one of the East Multnomah County school districts. 

 

The main focus of summer instruction is math and language arts. This is a temporary position beginning around June 18, 2025, and ending July 22, 2025. Some evening work is required. Applicants must commit to being present throughout the duration of the summer program. 

 

The position will remain open until all vacancies are filled

 

Assignment Duration:  6/18/2025 to 7/22/2025

Work Days and Hours:  Monday through Friday - eight (8) hours per day

Total Work Hours:  Not to exceed 200 hours

Reports to:  Migrant Program Manager

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

Provide direct instruction to pupils in Migrant Summer Program

 

NATURE & SCOPE:

This position is subject to Board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department regulations and applicable State and Federal statutes.  This position carries no administrative authority or responsibility.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Cooperate with other staff members to establish and maintain program goals and requirements.
  • Plan an educational program that addresses the common curriculum goals from the Oregon Standards for Learning in the content area.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects are being worked on simultaneously.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans and learning objectives to ensure educational and behavioral progress.
  • Utilize relevant information to assess and identify students’ educational, psychological, physical and social needs.
  • Sequence learning activities and modify instruction based on individual needs.
  • Provide applied learning activities that are active, student directed, project based and integrated to prepare students for transition to the next level.
  • Evaluate students’ educational progress utilizing a variety of assessment tools and methodology (i.e. student portfolios, student demonstrations, criterion referenced and standardized tests).
  • Select and request books, instructional aids, and curricula and maintain inventory records as required.
  • Identify and utilize resources within the school and community to meet students’ educational needs.
  • Communicate and confer with support services and community personnel to address individual student needs.
  • Implement systems and strategies to facilitate student learning at community sites, which may involve writing learning objectives and supervising student progress.
  • Communicate, cooperate and demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, supervisors, community members and others.
  • Use personal safety techniques to assure the physical and emotional well being of students to avoid exposure and injury to self, students, and other staff.
  • Maintain records, meet timelines.
  • Follow policies of the District, and procedures of the Department of Instructional Services.
  • Maintain satisfactory job attendance record.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a school environment. May work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations. Involves sitting, walking and attendance at evening events. Requires the use of computers, office equipment and driving personal vehicle.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Establish and implement behavior management guidelines for students consistent with program needs.
  • Implement large group, small group, and individual instruction; and cooperative learning and peer tutoring strategies.
  • Integrate workplace readiness skills into content area instruction.
  • Provide career related opportunities for students, and experience based education.
  • Develop math and language arts curricula aligned with Oregon content and performance standards.
  • Knowledge of child development.
  • Valid drivers license and own transportation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Oregon Teaching License with Experience working with migrant youth.  Highly Qualified status in ELL preferred.
