Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing residential mortgage underwriting team.
- Provide coaching, training, and mentorship to ensure team members are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Manage the end-to-end residential mortgage underwriting process to ensure efficient, accurate, and compliant decision-making.
- Maintain and enforce underwriting policies that align with regulatory guidelines (e.g., Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA) and MCU’s risk management framework.
- Evaluate complex loan applications and provide expert guidance on escalated cases.
- Act as a key driver of innovation in MCU’s underwriting strategies, leveraging data and insights to enhance operations and member satisfaction.
- Monitor industry trends, regulatory updates, and market dynamics to inform strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with MCU leadership to design and implement new underwriting programs tailored to the unique needs of our members.
- Analyze and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including turnaround times, portfolio performance, and risk metrics.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost savings, and technology adoption.
- Partner with IT and vendors to implement underwriting technologies and tools that enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Work closely with MCU’s lending, compliance, and risk teams to ensure alignment on business goals and member-focused solutions.
- Provide input into product development initiatives to create mortgage offerings that meet the diverse needs of MCU’s membership.
- Act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (MBA or advanced certifications preferred).
- 7 years of experience in residential mortgage underwriting, with at least 3 years in a supervisor role.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and regulatory requirements in the mortgage industry.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
- Expertise in mortgage lending systems (e.g., Mortgage Bot, Encompass) and familiarity with digital underwriting tools.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- Experience working within the unique complexities of the New York Metropolitan real estate market is highly desirable.
- Thorough knowledge of Fannie Mae and all other secondary market guidelines.
- Knowledge in the areas of TRID, Appendix Q, RESPA, MDIA, HMDA, TILA, ECOA, FCRA, Fair Lending
- Ability to work extended hours when required.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines;
- Must be flexible and adaptable in a changing environment;
- Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
